Judy, the director at the art gallery, asked me to create some cards with my photos on them to sell at the gallery's gift shop. What do you think? Are the one's I've posted of late and in the past worthy-of-sale items? If that flies I may get on the ETSY bandwagon.

Art Show and Reception On Cloud Nine

What can I say? My first ever art show was unbelievable for me. Perhaps its being brand new to this arena, perhaps just being naive, it was for me a huge excitement.
I invited my next door neighbors and my best childhood friend to join us. Patty, who I've known since infancy, came laden down with flowers! Dave and Donna joined us for a pre-show dinner.

The gallery was all lit up, the paintings, prints, photos, mixed media, textile, jewelry, sculptures, all looked so awesome on the walls and pillars. I thought the art work looked PROUD of itself. I know mine was. I had things spread out in three rooms. Life's Crazy Pieces was way up high above two other pieces of art with a light shining right on it. It's gold threads sparkled in that light.
Abstract in Black and White: Frayed Roses stood in the hallway, and Riding the Rails of the Orient Express had a corner spot in the back most room. And it looked incredibly proud with it's green ribbon hanging down from it's hanging rod.

My dear husband and friend followed me around to take photos of me and my work. A lovely woman gave me the most wonderful compliments as I stood to be photographed with RTROTOE. Wow.

I just had a hard time believing it was all happening to me.
Of course there were lots and lots of other artists there hopefully all feeling as excited and as proud as I was feeling. And lots of supportive friends and family members. It was just a grand, grand evening.

I wish you all could have been there with me, as I did feel I owed you all a huge thank you for helping me get to where I am and had you been there I would have said so right directly to YOU.
Thank you for your continuing encouragement and examples to create and take risks and grow...and even to crow! As I am fully aware that I am CROWING!

Henry Says Hi and Look at What I bought from SukiPoet

Henry comes in to say hellow, as it's been a while;

.JPG">
Cousin Judy gave me the above succulent a while ago and it is now blooming:

My first bearded iris blooming this year. When enlarged I see a camels head/face. Do you?

And do you see how the yellows and purples of the flowers come out in this outstanding piece I purchased from our own Suki Poet: Remember to double click to enlarge the photos to see the details. Suki, this reminds me of an ark of the covenant, that holds the holy Torah in our temple. And the wisps of threads that sweep across it remind me of the tassels on our prayer shawls, tallet.
I am so happy to have this piece of wonderful art of yours called Housekeeper's Shield in my home. It came to me from New Zealand where it was in a museum show.

Thanks To YOU My Friends

I apologize for not commenting sooner on all your congratulatory comments to me for my recent good fortune having my three art quilts selected for the juried art show! I appreciate every word you have sent my way. I have been busy floating on a cloud and also busy sewing a new quilt (Judy at the art gallery said I need to start calling my stuff "Textile Art"), okay working on a new textile art quilt, sorry Judy...quilted textile art?...for my aunt who is turning 89 in May. She and my uncle owned and operated a camera store for all their working years till retirement and photography was big in our family. Especially family photos. So this textile piece is full of family photos! I will blog it when finished. All that to say why I've been busy and to again THANK YOU ALL for your wonderful praise. I SWEAR I could not and would not have done it without YOU!

A MOST UNUSUAL DAY: Beyond my wildest Dreams

Well now I need to tell you a few things about my day.
It was a bit stressful knowing that I was waiting for a phone call that very well
might not come. We would only be called if any of our works were selected by the judges, if not we were to pick up our art work by 7 PM tonight.

Then lo and behold, I who usually let the message center pick up my phone calls,
answered a call that came between clients around 3 PM.
It was someone from the art gallery telling me that 3 of my pieces were selected by the judges to be in the Juried Art Show! I could not believe what I was hearing.

I must have made that poor woman tell me three times.
She said that they selected:
1. Riding The Rails of The Orient Express
2. Life's Crazy Pieces
3. Abstract Black and White: Frayed Roses

OHM GOD!
I am still in shock.

I had to see two more clients before I could go to the art gallery to
make sure this was real, and pick up the pieces that were rejected.

At six o'clock I high tailed it over there, and was given lots of kudos and congratulations.
I got my stuff they did not choose packed up and then Judy, the director told me
I also won an award! Oy, not only did I make it into the show, which was enough for me and is huge in and of itself, I also got an honorable mention for Riding the Rails...

As if that was not enough, while I was there a reporter/photographer from the local newspaper was photographing the winning pieces (best of show, first, second, and third prized pieces)...
Judy asked me if I'd mind standing with my piece Rails for a news piece!
Would I mind?

Okay, sure, why not. I was still in a complete state of shock. I just wanted to giggle and I think I did...a lot. Probably a whole lot.

That done Steve, the assistant director, said not to go yet. To put my things on the table and wait. They had something else to ask of me.
Judy came in and asked if I would let them photograph my Abstract Black and White piecefor the cover of their program or something still not sure what but I said no in a joking way,
then said of course I'd be honored. They weren't sure they'd use it but felt it might show better than a picture framed under glass.

Then I flew home to tell DH.

Needless to say there is a cloud with my name on it and I am floating up high tonight.
I will try to keep my head on my shoulders and not float away completely,
but believe me this is beyond my wildest dreams.

Whew, now I think I will go sew.

[This is the first show of any sort I have entered my art in. They chose 100 pieces from 400 pieces of a mixture of oil paintings, water colors, photography, jewelry, sculptures, textile, mixed media, entered. Mine were in competition with all of the above mentioned entries. I feel so humbled]

Passover The Jewish Holiday

Today, Jews all over the world are sitting down to a Seder Dinner to commerate the Jewish Holiday of Passover, Freedom from bondage in Egypt. My daughter just called me to wish me a happy Passover. She is going to a small, short (she said), children's seder at a friends home with her husband and two children. She asked me to look in my Hagddah (the book read from on Passover) to see if the "Butterfly Poem" was in it. Something she remembered from seders past when my grandparents were alive. Well she wouldn't have remembered those times but from her childhood at her grandparents table. I didn't find it in that book so I went on line and I did find it there and I wanted to share it. A poem written in a concentration camp during WWII. "The Butterfly" The last, the very last, So richly, brightly, dazzlingly yellow. Perhaps if the sun’s tears would sing against a white stone.... Such, such a yellow Is carried lightly ’way up high. It went away I’m sure because it wished to kiss the world good-bye. For seven weeks I’ve lived in here, Penned up inside this ghetto. But I have found what I love here. The dandelions call to me And the white chestnut branches in the court. Only I never saw another butterfly. That butterfly was the last one. Butterflies don’t live in here, in the ghetto. Pavel Friedman, April 6, 1942 Born in Prague on January 7, 1921. Deported to the Terezin Concentration Camp on April 26, 1942. Died in Aushchwitz on September 29, 1944. “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” Children’s Drawings and Poems from Terezin Concentration Camp 1942–1944. By Hana Volavkova (Editor) A total of 15,000 children under the age of fifteen passed through the Terezin Concentration Camp between the years 1942-44; less than 100 survived. In these poems and pictures drawn by the young inmates of Terezin, we see the daily misery of these uprooted children, as well as their courage and optimism, their hopes and fears. May none of us ever have to experience, witness anything like this ever again.

Dawn for Hopper's Poetry Challenge

Could not sleep, tossed and turned Cat woke up disturbed by thrashing feet Clock said 2, then 3, then 4... Would dawn never come? Oh how I wanted to be at my design table With scissors in hand Fabric flying every where At dawn I could finally get up and sleepy eyed Trudge downstairs and grope for scissors and fabric Longing to turn it into a gift of love.

Excited

I am very excited about a new project I have just started. My aunt Mimi is turning 89 in May. There will be a big family gathering. I want to make her a lap quilt and it will have photos from her youth to now of all the family, parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. I got an idea from Cloth Paper Scissors I am using for a "pillow case" quilt. I will add photos later for you to see. Tomorrow is last minute readiness for Art Show selection pieces. Going to enlarge some photos and frame them. Saturday I take in my art work for selection/rejection process. And then I PIECE,SEW and QUILT!!!!

Art and Grandkids Day!

Needless to say? I had a wonderful Sunday with my grand kids. They painted on one big canvas with acrylic paints. I taught them about "mixed media" and they added stickers and ribbons to the paintings! We played indoors and out, Grandpa and Grandson had a guitar duo going, they played invented games on tricycles carrying boxes on the back loaded with balls, and brooms, and rackets, being delivery people.
We took a nature walk where we identified lots and lots of flowers in bloom.

These are grandma and grand daughters shoes; and granddaughters favorite monkey dressed in a sweater I crocheted for her when she was a new born preemie, knowing full well that one day it would be doll clothes! And now it is.
