Blooming Tuesday and Watercolor class

This blooming Tuesday photo was taken last Saturday on my way to see my family in Berkeley, CA! I think it's wisteria, but you may correct me if I am mistaken. It was gorgeous! On Sunday I took my first ever WATERCOLOR class at the community college. The teacher was the same as the one who taught the DRAWING WITHOUT FEAR class I took three weeks ago. His name is Robert Regis Dvorak and he has a web site: www.youcreate.com. I loved the first class and I loved this one too: The Magic of Watercolor. They were both fun and filled with valuable information, non stop exercises from 9:30 AM- 4:30 PM and we went a bit over that this time. One of the first exercises was to simply use all the colors in our palette in an abstract design. Once done and dried we were to use a small rectangle stencil and pick 3-5 spots that made small finished paintings. These are mine:
I was quite proud of my finished very first masterpieces. ;-) she said humbly.
Then we got a lesson in color and color mixing, complimentary colors, etc. We were to next copy a drawing of a bird and paint it however we wished. Becoming comfortable using our brush, which is a long wooden handled Calligraphy brush: CC3 Yasutomo China
In this exercise we drew minimal light lines and learned about leaving white paper
in this case for a waterfall, starting with sky, painting mountains, fanning the brush to make striations in the mountain sides, and drawing trees with our paint brush.
These trees were done leaves first, then trunk. I neglected to leave white in my leaves for more branches (I'll do better next time)...and shading on the trunks using a darker color.
All the exercises seemed to be done quickly. Watercolors as you know
and I learned dry very very very quickly so you have to work fast.
Then we learned how to make people with little multicolored blobs for faces,
a sideways swish of the brush for shirts, and a downward swish for legs and skirts and pants.
Hair added to point faces in different directions. Most of mine are looking forward.
This exercise felt like pre-school. We painted the blobs of color and then sprinkled salt on them
which gave them the textured look. Once dry we used a plastic knife or a credit card to
scrape off the salt. Then we used a thin bamboo spear to draw lines and trees on the hills, and water fall in between the bottom hills.
And then we were to draw and paint a banana using different colors
to show depth and shading. I am surprised at how realistic mine
looks to me today. I think it aged well over night. Ripened!
And last and quickly done this combo of sky, mountains, trees and waterfall.
Leaving the left hand lower corner open to invite the eye into the picture.
Not bad for a first time ever water colorist?
;-)
It was FUN!!!!

Proof Positve: Cactus Monday Devotee

This is proof as to the extent of which Blog Land runs my life. On Saturday as I drove down 4th Street in Berkeley, CA on my way to meet my visiting cousin I spied a sign that had me pulling off the road, grabbing my camera from my purse, jumping out of my car and shooting pictures as fast as I could...
Happy Cactus Monday to the rest of you nutty bloggers who participate in HCM with me~

Gal's Day Out Continued in photos...and words...

Now you know HOW SPECIAL my day was Yesterday. When my grand daughter arrived and greeted me by giving me this picture she had made for me at her school.
(In case you can't tell, that is me in the center and my house on the right side)
On Saturday I had a wonderful day meeting up with my cousin who came from Colorado for a visit. The photos tell the story backyards... These nature shots were taken on an hour long walk she and I took after our lunch...where we talked catching up on family, her parents/my aunt and uncle, kids, grand kids, my kids and grand kids, our lives...
I seem to find art where ever I go and this walk was no exception. Lots of ducks and egrets greeted us along our way...
The most heartfelt part of our talk was about her parents health,
and wondering how much longer we will have them in our lives.
And how much we love and appreciate them now.
Earlier we met up with my grand daughter and daughter who
came to join us for lunch.
Here we are in a toy store across the street from the restaurant
and GD is trying out a new fangeled toy you can spin in...or wear on your back
if you want to be a turtle...
Lunch was good, and just being together very very special.
We'll be together next in June when Barb comes again and
throws a big party with five generations of our
entire family of many cousins
to celebrate her Mom and Dad's 90th year!
Huggin' cousins!

Saturday: Girls Day Out

My cousin is in town from Colorado. Her husband is being inducted into the Jewish Hall of Fame. I didn't even know there was such a thing, but he was a famous baseball player for the Oakland A's in 1971 and 72. So Barb and I will have a day together. She is the daughter of the aunt and uncle I write about here from time to time. The ones who are now in their 90's. We'll meet in Berkeley for lunch on Fourth Street, as she has a fav spot there: Bette's. And we may go to SF to the De Young Museum or we may just hang out around there. We shall see. Might also meet up with my daughter and grand daughter. Lots to look forward to. Oh, the fabric art above is just something I threw together when I had an extra minute and the desire to create something.
Six word Saturday: Looking Forward to Fun With Cousin!

Friday Sky Watch and Drawings of Men

Sky on a back country road on the way to visiting my grand children last weekend.
It was threatening rain that day.
We got a few sprinkles only. Sky in my own backyard one lone birch between two of three redwood trees. Sky between the branches and first leaves on my fig tree.
Sky and clouds over colorful back yard scene.
What I see when on my computer.
More sky in my own back yard.
Home sweet home.
Some recent drawings of men in my drawing journal.
Wishing you a good weekend.
Thanks for coming by.

Up for the Collage Challenge and some Hand Lyntangles

Soul Brush invited me (and others) to join her in a collage making art endeavor. Not sure this is what she had in mind but when I had a hole in my day at work yesterday I grabbed some magazines from the waiting area, a pair of scissors from my desk, the scotch tape (no Elmer's glue there) and went to work/play! I know, I know...I kept looking at the young lithe woman I cut out and said: "Lynn, really!" But no, she stays as that is how I FEEL if no longer how I actually LOOK. It's maybe how I delude myself, how I still see myself inside my head/body...the rest is pretty obvious! Spring has sprung here! And I am in continuous pursuit of new art explorations! Such as the lyntangles done below:

My 600th Post And Wednesdays Walk...Lots of Flowers and one Critter

Beautiful tulip opens wide sidewalk art
Lilies say hello over the white picked fence
Iris from my front yard
Happy Animal Wednesday
This little lady watches me watching her
while on my walk yesterday
Today is my 600th post! That seems pretty special to me. I am not sure how long I have been posting...I need to go check on that, but six hundred times, wow. I am amazed. In six hundred posts I have shared a lot of my life; met an amazing number of wonderful people from all over the world, and been honored to share bits and pieces of their lives as well. I have been inspired to become more creative in many ways; gathered ideas that have spun off into art creations of my own and continue to grow both artistically and as a person from these connections and friendships. I thank each and every one of you who has taken the time to come visit my blog and/or who has taken the time to leave a comment. I get up each morning to start my day with checking in to this very connectedness I have created with you here and I appreciate you so very very much from the bottom of my heart. See you tomorrow! ;-);-) Lynn in California done in "Paint Program"

Blooming Tuesday Grows an African Tree

I made this piece on Sunday last trying to get myself out of grand kid-withdrawal. Something that happens to me when I haven't seen them in a while, then do have wonderful time with them, and then go home without knowing when my next visit will be. I go into a funk. Nice to know I can get lost in creativity in spite of the mood I put myself into. Silly me! African tree The tree top is a machine felted piece using scraps from dyed dryer sheet, my nest of threads, dryer lint (yes, I’ve heard others using it and had to try it, as disgusting as it sounded to me); the beads and gold and wooden leaves on tree and around the piece are from one of my recent garage sale necklace finds; the zebra and cotton African print backing (not shown) is from a yard of material from another garage sale; the piece is on orange and brown felt, hand embroidered and beaded, top sewn free motion quilted and trimmed in upholstery trim from the fabric store. I enjoyed the amount of hand work that went into this piece. I have discovered the relaxing joy of beading and embroidering pieces since making Living Green, the large woven piece made last.

Trying to show lots of close up details here. The tree actually shines but camera refused to capture that.

two wooden leaves and two gold metal leaves
Lots of little stitches in turquoise embroidery floss
and a thicker floss in gold around the outer edge of orange felt
The Whole Piece in all its Glory!

Animal Wednesday on Cactus Monday

Oops, I woke today remembering it was Cactus Monday NOT Animal Wednesday, but had already posted my animal photos...so you get two for one today! Enjoy!
These Deer are part a a herd I saw yesterday in my daughter's back yard.
If you even "think" you know this bald pate, YOU DO NOT. And you WILL NOT ever mention to him that you saw it here. Thanks. But it was too cute not to blog. (I do not have permission so please don't mention it if you know him). Thanks.
