My Life in Art Lynn Cohen

Our new teacher for the week at Sketchbook Skool is Jane La Fazio. I drew her and Danny Gregory as he introduced her on a video for her classes. I wasn't expelled from the skool for doing this so I guess it was okay. The black border is a bleed through from the previous page from black markers. I decided to use them rather than lose the pages.

Jane is all about framing her drawings. So this I did in her style.

And she's about using grids. So I sort of did here. But you can't tell as I erased all the pencil lines and only left the grid lines at the bottom of the page. I am nothing if not rebellious. I rather like my red cabbage and half eaten strawberry!

We had a difficult visit to my dear Uncle Harry and Aunt Mimi this past week. Mimi is now on hospice care, which means she is dying we just don't know how long it will take. The caretakers are terrific. They call her by name, they tell her what they are doing to her (when they come to change her, which is what I saw, and straightening her sheets). I don't know how much she realizes is happening or being done to her. She did open her eyes and saw me. I thought I saw her smile.

We took Harry for a walk outside, it was a sunny lovely day and he enjoyed that. He is beyond sad. I don't know how you sit next to your dying wife of so many years and survive day to day???
He kept asking me how long does it take to heal? He goes back and forth in terms of understanding what is going on. I imagine that helps some. I feel so bad for him. I miss my aunt too.

I took two photos and drew from them when I got home. It helped me process my feelings.

... and Henry is always a comfort. I drew him last night as he lay on my chest, noses all but touching. A difficult angle for drawing, and that's why he looks like someone else not himself. But he said it was okay.
It's just been a harder than usual week.

I'll link these to Paint Party Friday and look forward to your visits and comments. Thank you for coming by, it's so much appreciated.

  1. It was as if you were sitting in my grandma 's room drawing her. She had the exact same thing and looked the exact way, too. It is so difficult to see the sparkle fade! I know exactly how you are feeling. It is such a sad, horrible, devastating disease.

I am really glad that you thought you saw her smile! Keep that positive glimpse in your heart. It got to the point with my grandma when we started to wonder how much more can one person endure and why did it have to keep going on so long.

I feel so bad for you and your uncle. It is a good thing that you have Henry, your uncle, your art and your family to help you through the darkness.

    Thinking of you.

  2. I really enjoyed your sketches, Lynn. I always do. I especially like the red cabbage and strawberries. My heart goes out to your uncle. I wouldn't want to tell him this, but sometimes I get swept up in sadness, and it has been 6 months since my dh of 56 years together died. And I think it is harder for men to adjust to the new normal than for women.

  4. Oh dear, this brought me back to caring for my mom who was sick with tongue cancer and left us in February. Sometimes I cannot believe she is gone. But then I remember how difficult it was for her, like your aunt, a vital active woman so used to working hard, and then so weak, everything had to be done for her. When I remember that, I am happy she is free. And in Heaven, with the one who loves her best. While I was in the hospital, I would take pictures of her, and then turn them into watercolors using waterlogue. I did not want the reality of the pictures. It's good you were able to paint her and your uncle. I should have done that, but it was quite emotionally draining in the hospital. As usual, I so enjoy your paintings and stories. How wonderful that you were able to join Jane's workshop! Have a great weekend!

  8. That is so very difficult (((hugs))) and prayers for your aunt and uncle and of course the families that are affected by her illness. The paintings are remarkable, lol, what a time you give us, child. But you are loved and you are so talented. . . .because you are rebellious you are teaching great art to the rest of us. So you are definitely forgiven. Blessings, Janet PPF

  10. Your drawings of Jane and Danny are totally charming, and I think you captured your Aunt beautifully! It is so hard at the end when the person fades, and a fleeting smile means the world. Love to you all.

    1. Emma, Mimi is dying at home, not in a hospital. Harry and their son, are sitting at her side as I write this holding her hand, she is not expected to live beyond today. Today is her 95th birthday. Thank you for your kind words.

  12. What a poignant post. Your drawings are getting so rich and engaging. I hope you do another book. Isn't it amazing how drawing can help us process our feelings. The hospice drawing of your aunt and uncle is so touching and the cat drawing reveals so much more than just a portrait. Excellent work.

  16. I am sorry to hear about your Aunt Mimi. Uncle Harry is so fortunate that you are there with them. Your drawings and words touched me very much and brought back a time when I sat with my father and mother during their last days. Best wishes, Lynn. I also want to thank you for you kind comments on my fledgling drawings at skool.

  17. Oh Lynn, I just read your comment above about your Aunt Mimi. I am so sorry! I know how much they both mean to you, and it is hard to let go. You should be very happy that you brought some comfort to both of them in your recent visits. I will say a prayer for them and for you.

Your drawings are great. I hope doing them brings you some comfort. Hugs!

  18. Really great sketches Lynn. I am so sorry about your Aunt. Although she has lived a long and rich life, it still isn't easy. Hospice nurses are such angels - it sounds like they are a great comfort to you and your Aunt & Uncle. And of course, having your kitty sleep on you is the best. Sending you a big hug.
