Artists Love Attention!

Hi,

Welcome back or welcome for the first time, which ever the case, I'm glad to welcome you to my blog.

I continue to draw every day, and evening; I am no longer posting every single drawing I do, but almost. I also post on Facebook and in several artist's FB groups such as Sketchbook Skool, Everyday Matters, Artist's Journal Workshop, Urban Sketchers (group), Sketchbookers Society and I Love Creative Lettering. Oh, and Sketchbook Skool: A Drawing a Day, and on the Sktchy App on my iPhone.

So my art gets seen by many. I love the attention and responses it receives. I am sure every artist likes to have their work appreciated. And it's fun to share, to get inspiration from other artists, encouragement, all of which keeps me drawing.

Here we were last Thursday at Barnes & Noble Café. Interesting that I drew a woman with good hair last week and again this week there (see one of the last drawings on this thread)
I guess being a thin haired person I am drawn to others with full heads of luscious hair. A little green with envy perhaps.

I imagined these women as being best friends since childhood or maybe sisters even:

This is Lynne, a woman I met on line, who draws in urban environments like I do. She's also on Sktchy so I drew her portrait there this week.

These gals were all at Starbucks ... where I go to draw most of the days of the week.

I really enjoyed drawing Jonathan from Sktchy too. And the background was great fun as well.
I like how it sort of makes him pop off the page!

Haylee saw my art on Sktchy and asked me to draw her so I did. I don't know that she's seen it yet.

 

I finished another Travelers Pentalic art journal this week. That always feels like such an accomplishment, although I am finishing up about one a month or darn close to it.

This was a good day in another way too.  A woman sitting next to me at a table big enough for four saw me drawing and said something about it. I asked if she wanted to see more and she nodded affirmatively, so I handed her my almost finished sketchbook. She sat and looked at every single drawing (that way over 100 pages) and she smiled and laughed her way through it, stopped to compliment me over and over again. Needless to say, it was a very enjoyable experience for me.
(I can still remember when I was terrified to draw in public)

Sktchy folks are all about originality in posting interesting photos of themselves for others to draw. I like to find the ones with a bit of a challenge.

 

That said, Rebecca was such fun to draw. I added the dialogue myself.

She liked it. So did a lot of other people. Many said they saw themselves in this one.

 

Bam-Bam says he's an artist from California (like I am) ... I wonder if I'll meet him one day?

See, here is the second woman, second week in a row  at Barnes & Noble Café with a very full head of hair. If only!

 

 

 

And this guy with his tattooed arms that kept changing positions. I got two of them.

I drew these guys yesterday at Starbucks. This fellow is an artist too (on the left) with his service dog.
He wasn't doing any art today, just talking to the guy with the big bushy beard.

And finally just to prove moving people can't keep themselves from being drawn I got the guy below twice, first where he sat originally and second when he moved further away in the back of the room. (on the same couch those other two above vacated before he came in.)

Thirty People Scenes, Nine Portraits and One Rabbit (Mosaic)

Welcome  to my week in drawings. We'll start with today when we were in Starbucks in Dixon. Check out those huge cups on the wall behind the people. I have drawn this couple before. He never had a "bad attitude" before! They enjoyed a snack and then I moved on to the next couple ...

Please forgive my tiny off color joke here. I don't know what I was thinking, but I thought it and then I wrote it down. So in my mind this is what they were doing!

I am not sure if her computer gives her Visions or not, but I was more  concerned about the woman who saw me at my art making and called what I was doing "Coloring!" I mean really, yes, I was coloring my drawing when she saw me, but I drew it first. It wasn't in one of those new fangled coloring books you can buy at every store on every corner you know. It was in MY ART JOURNAL~!

Okay, I am over it now.

 

As I have mentioned before a whole lot of people seemed to run their businesses out of Starbucks.

The guy on the right was definitely trying to sell something to the guy on the left!

 

A few days ago, oh it was just yesterday, we went to another town and had lunch. I drew the woman who I think is the wife of the owner or maybe she co owns the deli with her husband. I was especially happy to see the Chanukah decorations on the salad counter. They spelled it wrong, but  I won't hold that against them. At least they had something for MY Holiday too.

 

Oh, I showed the sketch which I did in about three minutes to her afterwards and she really liked it.

 

Earlier we were in Barnes & Noble Café where I drew these people sitting across the room from me.

 

When I finished drawing them, a table freed up on that side of the room so I moved over there and drew this guy who sat down where I had been sitting earlier.

 

And then I drew the two  regulars (on the far left and right) who come here to write on their laptops. The gal on the right was really tired that day, she kept yawning. I know they know I draw there, but they've never said anything or asked to see what I do.

I actually drew the new person in the middle first.    

                     

 

The day before that we were in our town and I went with my husband to get a sandwich at the German Bakery. At Christmas time they sell a lot of German baked goods. I used to buy Marzipan for my mother in law there and send it to her for Christmas. She died eight years ago. It made me think of her and remember how much she loved Marzipan. And how much we miss her.

The rabbit is made our of white mosaic tiles with some colored tiles for decoration. Someone had put a red wreath of fake flowers around his neck. He sits at the entrance to the bakery.

Meanwhile earlier in the week back at Starbucks I drew the people sitting right in front of me at the big table ...

... and this three generational family in the soft burgundy chairs.

I swear to God this guy brought in his TV set from home. It was huge sitting on his table next to his normal sized laptop.

I have no idea what he was doing.

 

 

Earlier still in the week we were at a different Starbucks in our town this time.

This gal was dressed to the nines in her black trench rain coat with faux fur collar, and nylons.

 

 

And these two dudes were writing something on pink sheets of paper! Baseball betting was my guess.

 

I was impressed to see someone reading a book. I've seen this guy before there reading. No one has secrets from me.

I drew him as soon as I sat down. I loved his look. I do have a penchant for men in beards with bald heads. LOL He could have been a member of my family, but wasn't. He left shortly after I finished him. I added the background around him after he left.

She was at the other Starbucks.

 

So that is day time drawings. At night I draw from photos on Sktchy App on my iPhone.

Here are the nine I did this week so far:

 

I really like drawing Meral. You've seen me draw her before. This time I took photos as I went.

She likes how I draw her and tells me so.

I am enamored by her mysterious look. She is only 20 years old,

but to me she looks like a much more mature soul.

 

After all that black and white I needed something with color! Boy did I find some to draw in her.

 

After which I needed to calm my soul with more Black and White. Ball point pen.

 

I see this as a successful week. Sketchbook Skool is posting a new class about developing a draw every day habit with Veronica Lowlor. She is a good teacher.

I don't feel I need to learn to draw daily, because as you can see I already do that.

However, there is always more to learn from these teachers so I will sign up for the class. It starts in January.

I'd love to see some of you there.

Drawing OuT and ABouT! By Lynn Cohen

Starting my week at Starbucks is great, especially when there is a gaggle of gals standing around talking long enough for me to draw them all!!! Oh, and one guy too!

Hanging out in Davis is always fun and delicious too when it's salmon salad for lunch at this place.
Nice to run into an old friend there too!

Meanwhile, back at Starbucks. I needed to practice my drawing of letters, and the four guys there were an added bonus for listening into their conversation about a wedding and drawing them too!

An  assignment in Sketchbook Skool (boot kamp) took me downtown on a rainy day to draw from inside my car, these old buildings downtown.

And on the following day I sat in front of the long narrow window by our front door and looked through the rain at my across the street neighbors house and drew what I could see.

Later that week found us at the German Bakery where this group of students where all hunched over their computers; as was their teacher. He is the one wearing the tie-dyed shirt.

And when I got done drawing them I still wanted to draw more so I looked out the window at this view and captured it in pen and colored pencils.

Still working on lettering, I used this poem by A.A. Milne from the original Winnie the Pooh stories about snow. I thought it appropriate to do this for my friends and family, who are living under piles of snow in Denver, Minnesota, and the on the East Coast!

It seems there is always room and time in my week to draw a selfie. I know she does not look a lot like me, but I like her nonetheless!

Still working on Lettering for Book Kamp in SBS, this for a lesson from Koosje in Amsterdam.

And then our co-founder of Sketchbook Skool, Danny Gregory, who is celebrating the publication of his latest book: Art Before Breakfast, asked us to draw ours for him. You can buy this book on Amazon.com.  I am waiting for my pre-ordered book to arrive any day now.
