Jerry Garcia Silk Tie Art Journal = Quilted Journal Cover

I had a busy and productive weekend, especially Sunday! I was making art from the moment I got up until I went to bed (if knitting is considered making art too!). First I made this art journal quilt using mostly Jerry Garcia silk neckties and one Italian 100% Silk Tie (the blue one)! I put it in the 3CreativeStudios art journal quilt challenge. And then I turned it into a journal cover for my son's 47th birthday gift! He has been a Grateful Dead follower, and idolized Jerry Garcia for many years, maybe still does...When I found these colorful JG ties at garage sales and thrift stores I knew I had to make him something using them. It's hard to imagine a "deadhead" wearing a tie, isn't it? The Jerry Garcia tag was on the back of one of the neckties and it became a part of the journal cover. I can't tell you how wonderful silk ties feel...I have to mail this today or I will wear it out just stroking the cover! ;-) I recycled the ribbon that came on a gift to me recently, ;-))
Happy Birthday Danny ...soon.

  1. No doubt your son will think you are the coolest Mom for finding and then incorporating something he likes into something he can actually use.

  3. Love it! Mike used to wear ties to work and Jerry Garcia ties were his favorite. I gave most of them to his friends, but this would have been a fun thing to do with them--I mean, if I'd sent them to you...I am not talented that way, at all...

  4. OMG, Lynn! He's going to L-O-V-E this journal!!! What a treasure! You're right . . . can't imagine a Dead follower wearing a tie (unless it was used as a sweatband!) Absolutely stunning work!!! Hugs, Terri xoxo

  5. I happen to know firsthand that some dead heads wear "Steal Your Face" ties with lightning bolt tie tacks.

  9. maybe this was just Jerry G's answer to paintings on mugs. I once had a silk/handpainted tie collection. Not that I wore them, I dont know why I collected them Long since gone. Nice gift for your son.

  10. I have seen many things made with old ties. I have a few in my stash but I find them hard to come by. When you find second hand ones they always want too much money for them, suppose thats what happens when sellers find out that there is a demand for them. Love the wayout colours. I am sure your son will love it.
