Art Livens Up Trip and Then We Visit!

The day started off well enough on our ride of one hour to visit my aunt, uncle and cousin, but
when we got to the Brannan Bridge the bridge was raised to allow a boat on the water to pass.
This is a two way highway and there are signs along the way telling you when to turn your headlights on, even during the daylight hours, for safety.

We did have our lights on and my husband, who was driving, (blame him, blame him) neglected to turn them off when he turned off the ignition.
So,
the battery died.
When the bridge opened to traffic again and we could go...and the car would not start...
he pushed the car to the side of the road and we called our AAA road service.

While I stood at the side of the road WAITING for help to come I drew our surroundings and predicament..

(click on picture to enlarge and see details)

AAA got there in about 30 minutes or less maybe...

We drove on to our family.
While there I drew them. They are much more beautiful than they appear here
and I tried to explain that the drawings are caricatures...
I hope I didn't hurt any one's feelings.

(uncle Harry, aunt Mimi and cousin Barb)

We had a very enjoyable time together. I hope to see them all again very soon.

I am posting this for Paint Party Friday

  1. Isn't that aggravating to be stuck on the side of the road?? It was a busy place obviously. Glad to see that your Aunt and Uncle are enjoying visitors.

  3. congrats to being the featured artists soon. hey, an artist with her sketchbook and pen is never at a loss even when having to wait for AAA that's a really cool drawing too.

  5. I love this drawing! Another point to make it that if you wanted something EXACT, you would take a picture--Your drawings capture something more, I think--like part of the REAL person---

Your comment about my painting was spot on--without the white lines it's all just one big blob--

And, BTW, you are so sweet, but I really don't know that much about art--just what I've gleaned from reading books :)

  6. Bummer abut the battery but this is using Art to the fullest. Its not only therapeutic it also makes something aggravating count by drawing it... or Make Everyday and thing matter as Danny Gregory would say. :) and it makes time fly faster keeping busy. Good job.

Loved that you drew as you waited. Two extra points for being kind to hubby too, haha.I'm always so happy it "wasn't my fault this time" ☺

Excellent way to record a moment (or two) in time!

I love your picture of the car trouble, you will be able to tease your hubby for years as you have a record of the event. I'm sure your family were thrilled to have their pictures drawn. 14. You made lemonade out of the lemon for sure! A dead battery is a sketching opportunity for sure. Wonderful post!

  15. You are an inspiration! Your drawings are fabulous and I peeked at your quilts but want to go back and peruse slowly - take a long luxurious stroll as they are beyond amazing!!!

  18. Awesome family memory. You´ve incorporated your "adventure" to it. You won´t forget this visit! (And you might make sure neither will your husband for a long time ;) )

  19. You always make me laugh, Lynn! Even your "predicaments" are humorously told and drawn! I do think you must need a new battery, as I have left my lights on overnight with my Toyota and don't get a dead battery...but maybe they automatically turn off after a certain time?? Love your pictures of the traffic jam and your relatives, too!

  22. I also visited your art quilt blog and you are so incredibly talented. I've always planned to learn to learn to quilt when I retire b/c I am a closet fabric fabric junkie. I'm really looking forward to your feature next week on PPF. Have a creative weekend!

    1. I sat with my French-English dictionary to understand what you said and I think you said:
"No luck for your car, but a chance for a pleasant moment to draw!"

      How'd I do? thanks!!! Merci!

  34. That is terrible! but at least it was quickly fixed. Cool drawing, great way to pass the time 9at least for you, not for those not doing art) :o)

  35. An excellent way to pass the wait! We have a similar bridge but no signs for lights. DH would not be happy if I sketched any of his goofs, though. It's too much like evidence!

  36. Well, at least it resulted in a very cool sketch!

  38. Amazing that you made art from lemons, Lynn ! You are awesome !
Congrats on being the featured artist!
    Have a great weekend !

  39. Lynn you always do such amazing work. I'm so sorry to say I found such humor in the car battery illustration, (hubby and the arrow in particular)...even though I know full well it's anything but funny when your car breaks down, because two years ago my life was full of breakdowns!! I really enjoyed the painting.

Your relatives turned out exceptionally fun too!! I showed my brother a small caricature I did of him and he laughed so hard and loved it so much. He asked for a large one which sits in the hall of his gorgeous home, my daughter doesn't like how I portray her...so you win some and lose some!! I hope they enjoy it as much as we do!!

  40. I think it is great you let that opportunity be a sketching opportunity, you will remember always when you look at that page. I love the lines of cars. Love the drawings of your family as well. I love the character and energy you always show of the people you sketch. :)

  41. This page is fab! Way to turn a crappy stroke of auto luck into an arty moment!

  42. This is great - a fantastic way to keep the time passing when your stuck. (My car breaking down is my worst nightmare!)
    Congratulations on being featured!

  43. You had plenty of time to draw your situation. . . very detailed, I feel like I was waiting with you. I love the family, you are very detailed oriented on the little things I probably would have not thought to put in the painting. It is absolutely exquisite. Blessings, Janet PPF

  44. Don't ya just hate when you're stuck somewhere just waiting for help to arrive. At least you made good use of your time!!! Great drawing :0)

  45. I enjoyed looking through your blog and i most definitely will be back. I love your spontaneous and colourful style and your writing. Doing a drawing about being stuck like that-while being stuck- is fantastic! I chuckled at the little sun that said "bright sunny day". I also like the woman in the middle sitting so demurely. I would love for you to share some work (orange-ish) on Mandarin Orange Monday sometime. Thanks for visiting and your comments.
