Taco Jalisco Art Quilt For Art Quilts Around The World

I belong to an art quilt group on line called Art Quilts Around the World and every three months we meet the prescribed challenge of yet another fabric piece of art. This time I decided to meld my drawings that I do at Taco Jalisco into art quilt form.

I transferred them onto cotton fabric via my printer and machine sewed them onto the off white/cream cotton substrate. I hand embroidered around them for quilting and added buttons for embellishment.

I thought the little hanging sign gave a restaurant menu look to it.
The words are machine sewn free motion style.
The middle picture drawn from a photo Carlos gave me of his family is the focal point.
It's Carlos when he was younger (left), and his mom and dad who own and operate
Taco Jalisco's.

Around the sides I have sewn my drawings in wallet sized photos showing the people who gather to enjoy a meal there.

I always order the same thing so I sewed my order to this banner along one side. The red, white and green ribbon represents the colors of the Mexican Flag.

And this drawing shows my meal.

This last photo shows the red roses I added for embellishment; and the drawing of Carlos, his aunt and sister. I will give the art quilt to this family as a gift at the end of the year. The hearts represent my love for this family and place. I have been eating there for years, I have been drawing there weekly since November 2011.

  19. Wow! Lynn this is amazing work. Not only being able to copy your paintings onto cotton!? but all the hand embroidery and piecing and other embellishments! They already have it I think, from last Christmas, because you talked about the to girls who saw themselves on it. How did the family react? Did they know about it ahead of time? These quilts are so unique because they are almost like elaborate journal pages!

    1. Gloria I just gave it to them a couple of weeks ago...and it was "the Couple" who found themselves on it. The family did not know that I was making this...it was a surprise, to thank them for letting me draw there. And for their friendship over the past year.
They were very effusive with their praise, and appreciation. Thank you I'm glad you like it too!
