Sketchbook Skool More Playing Lessons, Every Day in August, Drawing from Life.

This past weeks lessons for Sketchbook Skool's More Playing Klass involved drawing with both my dominant (right) hand and my non dominant (left hand). You can see the differences above drawn while looking at my subject and the paper.

The next one's a blind contour. Again Right and Left hands ... (not looking at the paper)

This was done while looking in a mirror ... Right then left hands.

These teachers demand a lot from us. This one was both hands at once not looking at the paper. It's amazing what came out of these. And how awkward it felt to draw with my non dominant hand. But others who have been doing it longer say it becomes comfortable after a while. Try it?

In the drawing group, Every Day in August, I drew these from my imagination this week. It's becoming easier to draw from my imagination, but they don't please me yet as much as my drawing from life do.

"Oh Baby"

"Senior Moments"

"My Abode"

"Insect"

"Sunrise, Sunset"

"Folk"

"God-Goddess"

"Emotion"

We are waiting for news after spending yesterday at Uncle Harry's side.

And then there are the drawings I just did because, from life:

I love drawing from life best. And drawing PEOPLE. I drew Uncle Harry last Saturday on a visit that was a wonderful 5 hours with him. He had new hearing aides so he could hear us well; He was clear headed most of the time, he got sad at times remembering his grief (loss of wife Mimi and two sisters); but mostly he enjoyed being with us and sitting outdoors in the sun watching the butterflies and enjoying our conversation and so did we!
We had no idea he'd be in hospice care a few short days later.

These were done at a stop in Starbucks in Dixon. I enjoy seeing the mix of ages there. Everyone is busy doing something.

People standing in line are great drawing models.

I started this drawing on one day ... and then drew

One of the guys with his wife in this picture ...

... and his wife with another guy, who was a composite of two men, as the first one "the head" got left behind when we had to change Starbucks, because the first one didn't have decaf coffee for Fred; so I drew the rest of him from another guy at the second Starbucks, and put the other guys wife in that picture.

Are you keeping up with all this?

I did these next two at Tacos Jalisco and rather liked the black and white for a change. I didn't have time to color them there and decided not to later.

On yet another day I added the couple on the far right to the group on the left done the day before somewhere else. Art journaling is such fun. And you have free range/artist license, to do with your pages whatever you want.

One more homework assignment from Sketchbook Skool, More Playing, was to draw from something we found in the newspaper. I'll let you read my news in the drawing!

And that my friends is this past week.
I hope you have a Creative Week coming up.

Thank you for coming by. And thanks for your comments, as
they mean the world to me.

  5. I love your drawings from life the best. I feel like I know some of those that you draw often. I'm sorry about your uncle Harry. Your drawings show a lot of the emotion that you and family are going through at this time. On another note, you must be ambidexrous * because your left hand drawings and not half bad. Mine would be all over the place but yours look similar to those of the right hand. * don't know how to spell that.

    1. Faye thanks for your kind words.
I was amazed at how my left hand drew, but it was very difficult to do, painstakingly slow, so no, I don't think I'm a ambidextrous drawer. Not yet anyway.

  6. A great week of sketching, Lynn. Sorry to hear that Uncle Harry isn't doing well. I know it means a lot to him to have you visit. Great job on the right and left handed sketches...especially the blind contours. It is odd to see sketches in just ink from you but I like those. Have a great weekend!
