Adding more photos...pinned on tonight...showing family dinner (I am about six in the photo, and we eat on china plates I inherited from Ella, my grandma; this morning I went hunting for her costume jewelry. Finally found it in a soft zippered box in a drawer by my desk...barely remembered putting it there (how many years ago?)...when Ella died I got to go to her house and pick over the belongings no one else wanted and I came home with so many treasures...her Singer sewing machine, her costume jewelry, her china dishware, kitchen ware, crystal glasses, table cloths, her menorah. I can't even remember now what all...but I still have most of it. And some will go into this quilt wall hanging. So much is gelling in my head and heart while making it. Tomorrow I will sew more. What a journey this is. What a trip back in time. What a blessing.
Love the costume jewlery. They used to make very good costume jewlery. How fun to be reliving good memories from the past. Did you mean to put on more then one photo? Or were you just telling about the family dinner picture? Cant wait to see this quilt when done. What a treasure this will be.
ReplyDeleteCris, the main base of the quilt piece has eight squares each with a photo in its center. There will be several other photos and several pictures of other objects that relate to Ella's life also incorporated into the quilt.
ReplyDeleteSounds wonderful Lynn, You could also use the photo of her costume jewelry you put on this post.
ReplyDeleteNo Cris, I am going to use the actual jewelry...a few pieces at least! Not a photo of it. The real thing! Like a "quilt collage!"
ReplyDeleteLynn, this is so lovely. The jewels but also just the process you are going through as you explore your family history through the making of this quilt. Things just keep unfolding and revealing themselves. How beautiful. It's like andrea said about creating. She has an idea and maybe sketches it out but as she works things unfold during the process that she had not envisioned in the original sketch. Well she didnt quite say it that way, this is more my own words bouncing off of her words but something like that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments on my bridges post. Means a lot to me.
Yes do put the jewels or some of them on the quilt. So glorious.
ReplyDeleteCreative journey back in time! I love your idea to put the actual jewels onto the quilt! It will have caracter! Be well and sew more:) Have a good day
ReplyDeleteAndrea
Yes, ideas keep coming in. My cousin Judy gave the suggestion for it being long and narrow; a freind from a Jewish group I belong to suggested a recipe by Ella, which I have incorporated; the jewels and photos have always been my ideas, but I have seen other memory quilts in books and did see the one in Cloth, Paper, Scissors...ideas for top-sewing parts also gleaned from contemporary quilts/art quilts books and magazines. And all my artist friends here, all of YOU, have helped inspire me in more ways than you can imagine or ever know.
ReplyDeleteIt takes a VILLAGE to make an Art Quilt!
What a blessing, indeed. The little heart brooch is especially charming.
ReplyDeleteI like to think that Ella knows somehow that you are making a quilt in her honor, decorating it with her jewelry.
ReplyDeleteThe pieces you got are wonderful and probably so full of meaning for you. I kept the same kind of things from my grandma's house when she died, the things that make you remember the person you loved.
ReplyDeleteWow ...these are so beautiful...They surely add to that sense of nostalgia... telling us how dear and precious are those old days we have our roots in...
ReplyDeleteWaiting to see more.
Thank you for sharing....
Hi Lynn,
ReplyDeleteI talked with you last night at the BWI party. I just spent the morning looking at your wonderful blog. Wow! Your work is amazing! It's hard to believe you are new to quilting. Your "roses" quilt is absolutely beautiful. Your "Ella" quilt makes me want to start printing on fabric like a madwoman. I too dabble in all sorts of art...collage, knitting, sewing, quilting, assemblage, etc. I feel like I've met a kindred spirit!
Diane

ReplyDeleteI look forward to your setting up a blog of your own so I can see your work too. The one quilt I have seen is awesome and I know I will be equally impressed with other works of art from you.
