I had lunch at Tacos Jalisco this week and while I was sitting and drawing the guy reading the paper at the counter, Christine, who works in my office building, came in to order take-out. She sat at my table so I added her to my picture as we talked. She was an art teacher in another life. She liked this portrait of her okay while she was seeing it upside down, but when I turned it around she didn't like it quite as much.
The guy from "The Couple" in my book (see sidebar) sat at the table across from mine so I drew him eating his lunch. I really should paint this one. His jacket was turquoise and purple!
Later, his wife came in and joined him. I added her to a next drawing and fit part of him in there too.
It's so nice of them to pose for me these past three years now!

Over at Paper, Paint, Pencils & Pens we are drawing to the theme
"Time Away From Home, Vacations/Holidays Real or Imagined".
In 1983 I took a trip to China. You can read more of the story at the other blog.
I did this ink drawing from a non-copyright photo I found on line.
I actually visited this pagoda with all is gold treasures when I was in Beijing.
Then I started back tracking to 1960 my first really big trip to Mexico when I was 19 years old. The long story is also on the other blog.
I did climb these pyramids outside of Mexico City.
One more stop in Mexico was in Acapulco where I slept in a hammock, sunned on the beach and ate freshly caught fish, beans and homemade corn tortillas for breakfast each morning for a few cents a day.
We post daily at Paper, Paint, Pencils & Pens and this is one fun theme. Go check out what the other artists are doing there. And if you'd like to join us leave me your email address and I'll send you an invite.
Happy Paint Party Friday and thanks to all of you who come here from there. I appreciate your visits and comments so much.
Happy Sunday Sketchers too, the same goes for you and your comments.
And to everyone else who visits known or unknown to me THANK YOU!
Have a creative week!
Hi, Lynn. As usual, I enjoy your drawings, but this time I thought that you have such a great idea concerning drawing vacations of the past. It seems to me that a blog helps us to rewrite our past and describe it the way we would like to remember it, not how we actually remember it. I'm going to have to ruminate on this. Oh, yes, and see you in skool tomorrow!
ReplyDeletebest, nadia
Great ink sketches of the locals and friends at Taco Jalisco!!! I am really enjoying the new theme and thinking about all the places I've been...and seeing all the places others have visited too.
ReplyDeleteOk you HAVE to paint that jacket. :)) fun to see everything together. Oh I missed one on PPP&P. the Acapulco one.
ReplyDeleteNice job.
Purple and turquoise jacket for a guy!? Yes, paint it! I want to see that! Your holiday paintings make me long for vacation ....
ReplyDeleteThrilled we are classmates for sketchbook Skool and love your work... I really love the one from your china trip... I would be interested to know how long it took you... Looks like a lot of work... And thrilled you are my numb 1 ... Might take me a few weeks to get something to you, but if will get there...xx
ReplyDeleteOh dear. You need not send anything Tracey. I was first comment, but I didn't actually sign up to send forward. I have so much drawing things going right now... but thanks. As much as I'd love getting some of your art. Oh hey. go send it and I'll just send back to you! LOL
DeleteThe China drawing maybe took a bit under an hour? Something like that. I did it while watching TV. Thanks for liking my art. Means a lot.
Lovely lot of sketches again, each one a perfect gem. Happy PPF, Annette x

Love your sketches, and I really admire those of you who can sit out or in a cefe sketching. I certainly have to try that once. Happy PPF.
ReplyDeleteI always love seeing your cafe sketches, such expressive drawings. Love all your travel pictures, my you've been to quite a few places.
ReplyDeleteHappy PPF
Von
you are doing wonderful work. Each person that you capture is truly unique and filled with personality. And love your travel pieces - we are about to leave for Europe for 10 days... maybe I'll try to sketch places... not something I usually do! Happy PPF!
ReplyDeleteOh Jessica I do hope you'll keep an art journal of your travels. I'd love to see that. (if you chose to share any of it on your blog perhaps?) Thank you for your kinds words. Have a wonderful trip!
DeleteLynn I enjoyed seeing sketches of your early adventures. But it was good to see the man from the Couple again along with your co-worker. How do you handle the idea she didn't like it right side up but did like it upside down? I think all your sketches show such amazing talent.
ReplyDeletethank you Faye, You are so kind to me. How do I handle it? I figure that is about her not about me and my art. Of course I know my people do not necessarily look like who I am drawing, and people do not like to see themselves not looking like themselves so much I think. Especially if they are caricatured, as I think my ink drawings of people are doing. Hey, they/we don't always like our likenesses even in photos when we do look like ourselves. Our self perceptions are usually different. I'm always surprised by that older woman in the mirror these days, especially since I let my gray hair grow out.
DeleteI always love your ink works. I got the sailor pen and have yet to use it. Your TJ's are always so good.
ReplyDeletelovely work Lynn!
ReplyDeleteLynn, fun to read what you're up too. I like the sketch of the lady who sat with you while waiting for the take out. Her sketch was particularly fun for me! Thanks for sharing your awesomeness...YES that's a word!
ReplyDeleteHappy Paint Party Friday!

I often think conventional teachers are why so many artist miss the boat earlier in life! I think she looks amazing in the style that is true to you! I love the evolution of Lynn...because you can do very detailed work full of perfection, and other work that is free and expressive but tells a story! I would love to see them all colored too!

DeleteMy heart goes to you too!Love the sketches. Some time ago I used to like only sketches. Then I fell in love with colors. I love each one of your pieces of art. There is nothing like travelling abroad. It renews us. Have a magical day, my friend!
ReplyDeleteI so enjoy your art Lynn. You have been busy.
ReplyDeleteNicole/Beadwright
Love your work with the inks. Nice collection of travel pictorial notes and the jacket, yes, do paint it in those two gorgeous colours.
ReplyDeleteAnnabelle : )
fun how your sketches are also memories
ReplyDeletetaken from your life
most my art comes from my imagination, not too many memories involved
Such wonderful slice of life artworks! Drawing from life, especially people and animals, is quite challenging, yours are great! Beautiful vacations past paintings as well.
ReplyDeleteYour sketches of the pyramids and Acapulco brought back so many memories of trips I took with another family from Mexico when my son was young. Thanks for that! Have a lovely week.
ReplyDeleteIs it me or are you always having tacos?!?! hahaha :) Lovely sketches once again, Lynn. You always know how to put a smile on my face. :)
