A Hint of my Ella Quilt Wall Hanging

This is to be a wall hanging for my young cousin Amy, who is an artist who recently married, and when given the option for a gift off her registry or something I make she chose the latter. I have been working on this one "in my head" for weeks now, and just started putting the foot to the sewing machine pedal...It is not to look "country", I hope it to look "arty", and I hope it to convey the memories of our grandmother's life (Amy's great grandmother). The top photo is one of Ella as a young woman, perhaps bride, not sure, and the one in the quilted piece is her and her husband, our grandfather Abe and first baby daughter, my mother. My cousin Judy who peeks in here from time to time asked for at least a hint of what I was doing so here it is Judy, just for you!

The cloth is vintage prints from a quilt shop depicting a woman and children sewing. My grandmother was an excellent seamstress and made her own dresses.

  2. This looks to be another winner. It doesnt look country nor does it look old fashion. I guess it does look Arty. How cool is it when family WANTS something hand made. Does she have an idea of what you are doing? or will this be a total surprise? Thanks for the preview.
I need to get going on mine project too. I am not sure how much this knitting kit thing will go over, but it will be fun to do.
I guess I like to have a reason to do something sometimes. Makes it more fun.

  3. Hi dear Lynn. So happy to know you. I noticed your comment just now.
The look here you have toward life and art enthraled me.... i just sat looking at your collage below for ten minutes.. it's hilarious ... a labyrinth you want to get lost in it to find the beauty of life . you are a true artist...changing the world through your art.
I gladly add you to my blog roll and you'll hear lots of crowing from me here!!!!! :D

  4. Lynn, the black and white photo goes so well with the colour of the fabric you chose! And the "connection" between women and children sewing, and your grandmother's skills is excellent! The red of the frame is deep, rich and gives the image structure. This will be a very beautiful piece! Have a nice day,

  6. Lynn, I love this idea. Are you going to sew in the actual photos or a copy? Personally I like to use the actual photos(in collages and assmeblages) because otherwise they'll just be sitting in a drawer. Love the vintage materials. And I too am impressed the newlywed wants handmade but then you say she is an artist herself.

  7. Thank you all for your feedback on my Ella piece. Exciting for me to have it have this strong an impact already.

Suki, I have printed the photos onto cloth. This blends with the cloth of quilt pieces better than paper would, it's soft and they transfered incrediably well/clear! (I have to say I'm glad I had these photos, some in frames, some in albums and yes, some loose to use on this wall hanging). Yes, I too am glad she opted for this "home made piece". Another cousin opted for bowls. But we all have our own tastes and needs. So something for everyone. That's why I ask first.
Human Being, be careful with your "crowing" or my head might explode from your praise! Thank you very much, I'm glad you like my art.

  11. This is beautiful and will be treasured. There is a great article in one of the recent "cloth, paper, sissors" about doing this type of quilt - it is a great idea and so beautiful. good luck with this project.
