What Am I Without My Pens and Paints?

On Sunday I sat with my two 7 yr old twin grand kids, one's male, one's female, for those of you meeting them for the first time. Both like drawing, painting, and sports. They are very well rounded. They play baseball, the boy; and soccer, both! The boy wrote some awesome Haiku poems for his mom for mother's day. I wish I had copied some to share but I didn't. The girl wrote her grandpa and I a cute poem... It was sweet. It sat on the doorstep awaiting our arrival on Sunday.

They wanted me to draw something for them. They gave me some library books and instructed me to copy the characters on the cover, thus the flying rabbit and fox above. The girl on the right is supposed to be my grand daughter, but she said it looked like a woman. I guess I was seeing her in the future. It's fun to draw with them. You saw yesterday how she drew ME.

Today I was still dragging the weekend out with my every other Monday off from work. I had a few chores to do, errands to run. I decided to get my car washed. I was obviously too lazy to do it myself. So I pulled into the car wash where they do it for you. These were two of many more folks sitting and waiting for their cars to be taken care of. Everyone was wearing sun glasses and everyone was looking at a technological device in their hands. I guess I am one of a very few breed who still looks at people...and draws them even for goodness sakes! I only own a "dumb phone".
Both got up quite soon after I started to capture their poses so these are quickies. The chairs thank goodness stayed in place.

It was a lazy day, not a whole lot accomplished, but the car is now clean!

  3. life is sure different now with these devices. but remember we wouldnt have the pleasure of seeing your wonderful artwork were it not for a similar device.

on a similar note, i stopped in a the library as i needed to "waste" some time before a store opened at 10. I had my journal with me and just wanted to sit at a table and write. There were a number of long tables at which people sat writing. In their computer! Not one had a notebook or piece of paper to write upon. I went to the sidelines and found a one person carol from the old days and jotted in my handmade notebook for awhile.

    1. I hear you Suki...I remember years ago now when my husband was encouraging me to buy a computer and I said: "What do I need a computer for!" He's never let me live that question down!

And it's nice to do somethings the old simple way sometimes too.

  5. I LOVE the saying 'I have a DUMB PHONE'..that is exactly what I have too. I chuckle that they have to make laws AGAINST texting while WALKING now. No one SEES anymore.. I am so happy to be drawing and photographing so I SEE now. Your work has taken off in big leaps lately.. these attest to it. Especially your use of color. That does look like Yael, but she is right.. a more mature Yael, but good non the less.

  7. Love this post, it's all about family and art. My Fav. subjects!

I had a dumb phone once ... it rang ...and there was nobody there, so I threw it away. Freedom! Wherever I go, I get no calls and even fewer texts!

You have given me an excuse to show-off about my granddaughters! There were three of them, the two eldest are sisters. It seemed they would never grow up and spent weeks at a time with us ... but sadly they grew up. The eldest became a psychologist, and now is a University lecturer. Her sister went to Cambridge University and graduated in law.

The youngest, my best friend, had ill health and was going nowhere at school. So I taught her at home. We did everything together including writing plays which we saw performed on stage. She is 21 in a month's time and about to graduate with a BA(Hons) in Creative Writing. "When I came to you grandpa," she said, "I was a naive young girl. But I'm leaving as a Grumpy old man!" The rascal.

The eldest and youngest have moved in and live with us.....and....I now have a fourth granddaughter, born on my birthday, who is 3. GAME ON Again.

Grandfathers are allowed to brag about their GDs' :0)

    1. KJ...I'll be doing just that later this year when DH and I take another road trip across country. I did a travel artist journal last trip. I see this one having way more PEOPLE in it and a few herds of buffalo too!

I am sure I would love the iPHone KJ, but I am at a time in my life when I am paring down expenses...and I don't NEED a phone except for emergenices and a rare call to a kid or friend to speak briefly. I have a computer at home and one at work...I drive between the two...and anywhere else I need to draw! Just where I am right now in my passions.
But you enjoy yours for both of us, okay?
