Early "Taco Jalisco" Art Getting Ready To Make Into A Book

In November 2011 I started drawing once a week, then twice a week at Taco Jalisco's Mexican Restaurant at lunch time. My goal was to draw for a whole year and see how I improved or if I improved.
My earliest drawings are all in ink.
This is when I first started drawing "The Couple"...

People eating alone and with friends and family followed and so did paint.
What I am wondering is as I scan these early art pieces from my weekly art journals onto the computer...with plans of turning them into a book that would be for sale...who might be interested in
having such a collection?

How many pictures would you want in such a book? 50? 100? 200? (I have eight books full).

I plan to wrap a story of some sort around them much as I do when I show them on my blog week to week. What do you think? Any ideas?

I know I will be happy with such a book for myself and to give to my grand kids. I'm pretty sure it will gain some attention at Taco Jalisco's and maybe even at the local art gallery as "local art".
But I also want to make it interesting to the art community. Let me know what you think.

I am linking this to Paint Party Friday and you can see what other artists are up to by going to their blogs via the icon on my side bar.

Addendum: if you visited my blog yesterday on Animal Wednesday there was some confusion about a prairie dog and a pika. Go back one post to see which is which.

  1. wow.. its been a whole year already? you had detail from the beginning. I like that you added the color tho. I have to think on the questions you asked and get back to you. HPPF I've been so busy I didn't get anything done for it. :(

  2. I love that you added colour... made them come alive... I think that you should be guided by how many illustrations it takes to show the year... I would think that a variety of sizes would mean that you could have more rather than 50... that doesn't sound like it is enough to show off your work... can't wait to hear about its progress...xx

  3. I like the look of black and white drawings, too - but you do have wonderful eye for color.
Your book project sounds like fun!

  4. I agree with Tracey let the year itself guide how many illustratios you include. I'm glad you added colour too as it really brings your sketches to life. good luck with your book.

  5. It is fun to see how your drawings evolved over the year. Can you have too many pictures? I don't think so. How your story progresses is how many it takes to illustrate. It will be interesting to see what you come up with.

  6. Have no idea how many plates you will need for your book, but one thing I am sure of it will sell well locally. Happy PPF, Annette x

  7. Your idea for a book sounds wonderful. With the little plein air work I've done I know I would be too self-conscious for this so you have my admiration for even attempting this massive project. Good Luck

  8. Hi Lynn, How time flies...bet you cannot believe you have been drawing at Jalisco's for a year now! Just as my opinion, I think 50 pictures would be enough for a book, that would hold peoples attention and not make the book too bulky - perhaps a few months at a time..I don't know, just an idea. Happy painting and have a good weekend.....ann.

  9. I think it's a great idea to collect all your pictures in a book and see the evolution from the beginning, I think you are very good capturing moments of life. Saludos

  10. A year? Surely not! I think you should collect them all in a book for your family and grands, but select maybe one a week to show the past 52 weeks- if that seems too thin-then maybe 2 some weeks- what a difficult chore to have to choose. Good luck, I know I want a copy! And have a great time with Ellie Bellie. Can't wait to hear of her progress.Send me pics and show videos too pls. Happy PPF.

  11. A year's worth of drawings wrapped up in a book sounds great. Remember that unless it's spiral bound, your page count will be a multiple of four, so knowing that might help you decide how many to include.

  12. I agree with everyone, you will know when enough is enough, what a cool idea, the people will love it, such a great idea, quite an accomplishment!

  13. I so admire your ability to "do" life scenes as you do. I think a book is a great idea. Maybe the people in it would want several copies for their children/grandchildren. At any rate, it looks like a doable project to me.

  14. Wonderful idea about the book! Maybe you can use different sizes of pictures in your book. One big one for one week, and some smaller ones. And then the story in between them. I like seeing how you started out! Adding of colour was definitely a plus!

  16. i am feeling your excitement just thinking about this being a book! i can only say if it were me i would start by making two piles: the drawings that must be included and the one's that are maybe or no. then i would count how many definites. and from there maybe do another look see from the maybes. what size for each, lynn? that determines cost and layout, yes?

the folks at jalisco;s will be over the moon! and i'm sure, so will you!

    love

  17. Congratulations! What a wonderful goal to set and accomplish. I am a seasonal person so maybe having pictures that show people in the different seasons and how they look or what they wear might be a way to go. Anything you decide will be wonderful, just thought I would throw another idea into the mix.

Again, congratulations. Your work is wonderful and I look forward to seeing it each week.

  18. Wow, eight book full!!! That is quite impressing. I really like that you added color to the ink, they seem to come alive more. I can imagine that this would be a fabulous book at Jalisco's to buy, but I can also see it in your local art community. How much more local can you get?

  19. Yup, the color is the energy in your work. What amazing work you do. I'm so excited to see what everyone is up to this week. I love all the inspiration....feeds my soul. Lucky to have you guys!

  20. Your art is terrific, Lynn. It is fresh and funny, too. I have no idea how much this would all cost you, but I was wondering if with each picture you could put the "story" that you had put with it on your blog post. I really always enjoy a painting the most when I know the story to go with it. I like both color and black and white.

  21. What a great idea to make this into a book. Would you write stories about the people too -- what you think they're saying, etc? Sounds like so much fun. I will have to give more thought to the how many - but I think it depends if there is a narrative to it... I'm sure the restaurant would love this.

  22. goodness, i know i left a comment after another person neither of which are here now. odd. but i thought also as with KJ that determining the style of book, the size of pages and the type of binding might come first, then you could tell whether to have a lot of pages ie if it would work mechanically.

anyway am sure you friend and relation s will love any and all pictures you chose. and it is hard to determine what the wider world will like best so just go for it with your favorites.

  24. Follow your gut make the book include as many pieces as you feel are your top quality work and share the fact that you've made it with everyone. Happy PPF!

  25. These are so great, I think it would be fun to have 365 drawings...each representing a day in the year, but I'm sure whatever you come up with will be lovely. I do so enjoy your sketchbook art!

    Happy PPF.

  26. I think it is really cool to have them all in a book. There are places that can make from 1 to 100, and people can order if they want to, but the important thing is that you will have it for your family.
I like both in just ink and the ones in color, both have their own charisma.

  27. I think all the above suggestions are wonderful, but somehow I see this project as bigger than you!! I can see an art show with your pieces framed as well as a book....you need to talk to a gallery, or ask at your local art store if anyone could make a suggestion of what you could do....I think you need a big perspective on this very large project! Once you have picked every ones brain...then go with your gut! Definitely make books for your kids...with all the work in progress, maybe a few smaller prints on one page and a larger one on another!!Make sure to include the quilt as one of your photos in the book!! You could pick your favorites and print them for a show too...This whole project is amazing... fun, funny and interesting!! All the best!!

  29. I am totally in the dark about how to go about creating this book (how many illustrations, etc), but I do love them. I think others would love them as well - they are quirky and tell a story without words. I also love the color you added. I will follow you on this journey -

  30. How exciting. It's fun to have you art and words into a book. I do all my books at
    http://blog2print.sharedbook.com/blogworld/printmyblog/index.html

I've been using them for about 4 years and I'm satisfied. Love your pages and would enjoy seeing them in a book.

  32. I think that's a great idea! Make a story out of it! I'm sure there will be a market for something like that. there's a free book on Amazon for Kindle about "Write to be Heard, Write like you talk" or something like that. Patsy from

  34. i'm with KJ and Giggles. Love the idea of combining a show and the book. Perhaps you could showcase really really good ones in the book, and then do a collage of some of the other ones. hard picks!

  35. I love your style and am pretty sure if you transfer your pieces to a book it is going to be a treasure for generations to come...so go ahead :)

  37. Hi Lynn. In answer to your question on if they make 1 page photo on book. They do. I did my paintings of Vincent Van Gogh in a book and they came out great. Send them email and ask them? Take care.
