Meet The Couple at J's (Taco Jalisco's) and Others

I have been drawing at Taco Jalisco's for one year this month.
This is the first drawing I did of  "The Couple" December 2011.

and here they are again on November 2012.

We are now "talking friends" who have lunch at different tables together at Taco Jalisco's and have done for way more than a year. I learned not long ago from them that they used to watch me read there, now they watch me draw! They told me this week that they were honored to find themselves on the art quilt I made for the Jalisco Owners and which now proudly hangs on the wall in the restaurant.

They have asked to see my art journal drawings recently and I was happy to see their positive reactions to viewing them. (I showed them my travel art journal, they have yet to see my drawings of them other than the one on the art quilt).

In this painting I drew him first then decided to draw them both in the position I could see them sitting together. She is wearing a very pretty shawl she knit herself. I asked her about it and complimented her on it's beauty on their way out.

This is the drawing I made on November 1, 2012... It's my 1st Anniversary Drawing of starting Year Two of Taco Jalisco drawing/paintings!

This I did the same day I did the top drawings of the couple. I drew these gals before the couple came in. It was the first time I had seen my art quilt hung on the wall. I felt so happy that they wanted it there for all to see.

It's hanging sort of high on the wall, and The Couple told me that Carlos pointed out a small picture of them on the quilt. They had to stand on chairs to see it. I got a kick out of that and so did they!

Lunch was "on the house" this day.
They would NOT let me pay!

I'm linking these to Paint Party Friday. See other really good artists work via the link on my side bar.
And thank you all in advance for leaving your comments as it totally warms my heart to read them.
Thank you so much!!!!

  4. Lynn, being a person who is not good at sketching something from a moving target(humans) I so admire your ability to be a scribe of the life of your community. The drawings are so "human" and endearing. I feel really ignorant, but what is an art quilt? Congrats on your being published in "The Pulse of Mixed Media". And thank you for your comment on my blog today.

    1. Gloria, thanks so much for your kind words. I do love drawing in my community and if anyone had told me I'd be doing this a year and a month ago I'd have thought them totally nuts.

An art quilt differs from a traditional quilt in that it has few rules, is not necessarily precise with matching pieces, and there are no mistakes (in my style anyway). Some examples of ART QUILTS can be seen on my side bar where you will find four I have made over the past few years. I have more if interested in my blog Textile Art Quilts By Lynn, and you can get there by the link at the top of my side bar. ;-) Hope you'll visit there. I am also a member of another art quilt blog also on the side bar called art quilts around the world, and you can see some fabulous art quilts there by many terrific artists. Come see.

  6. Congratulations Lynn on drawing for a whole year - YAY...that is some achievement. It is so nice to think that your art is up at Jaliscos and people get to see and enjoy it. I can imagine 'the couple' getting on chairs to look at their picture...how sweet is that. Have a good day....ann.

  7. How wonderful to see your illustrations a year down the line - your style has remained but developed, if you know what I mean! It's fab that you have an art quilt hanging on the wall there now - did you post a photography of it on your blog already (just wondering if I missed it)

  12. The lady in that couple has such an elegance to her. I just love that you memorialize everyday life in your art. I can see a whole movie being made about the lady who draws in the cafe. Starring you! Love, love your work and look forward to visiting each week. Happy PPF!

    1. Thanks Gloria, I am attempting to create a book of these drawings. If anyone has experience with self publishing I'd love to pick your brain. I keep running up against obstacles, questions? Which is best company to go with, financially, ease of creating?
What's best way to transfer paintings? Photo or scan?
      What's the best scanner?
      Word or PDF creator?
I hope I can figure this all out before too long. I'd wanted it done by years end, but it's not going as quickly as I'd imagined it might!
      Any advice is greatly appreciated.

    2. Hi Lynn, I am back! It takes me so long to get around to everyone. I wonder if everyone tries to do that. Thank you for the info on art quilts. I will get over to see them during the weekend. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I don't know about printing, but I know Carol marine and a couple of others have published their books with "Blurb". Supposedly not too expensive or hard to do.

  25. I think you are becoming famous around town. I love that you are now one year into it, that went by fast. I have been so busy on the loft that things are not getting done that I want to do.....but today I painted three stack type boxes. I have had them for a number of years and looked really sad, so out came the white paint and boy did I make a mess in the living room. Anyway they have the first coat. I will need them upstairs for storage. Paper, and gosh I don't know, but knowing me, they will be filled fast. Congrats sweet girlfriend, Mary

  33. Congratulation on your tenacious one year! Takes a lot of dedication to last a whole year, but what an amazing body of work you have!! I think the proprietors probably hung it high so it doesn't get damaged with greasy hands and such. I hate when artwork is hung above eye level, but in this case I think it was pretty smart!!

Very cool how you have created a little relationship with these two!! Again, you inspire me!
