People, Places and Things Not Necessarily in that Order

I drew this boat the same day I did the others last week, it was just on the back of the other boat page and I missed it then. Oops! It might just be my best boat so far!? I like it. It's just ink and watercolor!

I had a hair appointment this Tuesday! I was early because I wasn't working that day, and I left the house to go to the post office first giving myself plenty of time. So when I got downtown I knew I was early so I sat in my car outside the salon and drew the old building it is in. It's an old former spot for the Odd Fellows Lodge. I wonder how odd they were? Sorry, I have no idea what that organization is all about. I should look it up instead  of making jokes about it.

Well I didn't have a clock or watch with me, my cell phone was dead so I lost track of time and was LATE for my hair appointment. I am leaving this ink drawing gray to commemorate my new hair style. I have stopped having my hair dyed and as my hair dresser of the last 20 years reported to me, as of now I have no pigment left in my hair. NO color! I am gray! The funny thing is I do not see it. I see a little bit, but I guess I am in denial, as it looks sort of sandy brown to me in the mirror. My husband just shakes his head when I tell him this. Apparently I am a mix of different shades of gray and white. I wonder when I will SEE it myself?

I think I am a bit odd and old like this building, but slow to accept this stage of my aging process!

After my hair cut I went across the street and ate and drew at the Pure Grain Bakery. It was lunch time. The guy in front of me had a wonderful shirt I had to capture with ink. His business is called "Grumpy's". That's a car above the name. Then it says: "Gas & Grease"; Served Without a Smile ... Bring in Your Car, I'll find something wrong with it!" I thought it was hysterical so I sat and drew that with care ... Then I turned to the window and drew the young woman on the patio outside even though it looks here as if she might be talking to Mr Grumpy! I sat there with my colored pencils and colored them in at my lunch table! When I got home I added water and some water colors for his gray hair and her skin. The rest is water over colored pencil! Cool huh?

And last but not least, I had lunch yesterday at Tacos Jalisco. It's Wednesday and that's the day "The Floor Guys" eat there. You can see them squeezed together on the far right. They came in after I'd drawn the party of four on the left. I sort of over exaggerated the guys hair on the right, but it was spikey. I got the directions right! Again, I colored it with my new pencils there. My first times coloring in public this week!!! A new first! I love how the water later made her plaid shirt bleed. The walls are watercolors. So is the sky outside the windows. And the table cloths. I left the chairs and the letters dry so you can see the difference.

I'll link this to Paint Party Friday tonight for tomorrow. Visit the other artists via the icon on my sidebar. There is always a ton of great art to see there! And I have made so many new friends on that blog site. Thank you all who come and visit here to see how my week has gone by.  And thank you for your comments. I appreciate them so so so much!

(PS. I sold another book this week. Thanks to whom ever bought it!)

  2. I like your boat painting too, but then I enjoy all your paintings. I know what your mean about your hair, I think we can't see it ourselves. The same as happened to me. Get someone to take a photo of you Lynn, then you'll see it. Congratulations on selling another book. I guess you learnt a lot about the process of publishing, so your next one will be easier for you to produce.

You project how you feel so feel young and vibrant since that's what project to us.... who cares about color? :)

  4. As good as your boat drawing is, and as much delight as your people sketches never fail to provide, that building has really taken my fancy! You've given it such character, and just enough detail to let us know what it really looks like.

  18. I always enjoy your glimpses of people...but your building is fantastic! It has a nice whimsy feel to it. There comes a point when we just can't worry about this shell we carry around, known as our body. I hope it is what's inside that we really see.
    Happy PPF!!!

  24. Lynn, I hear you about hair color. My hair was getting so frizzy after a few years of "bleach" for highlighting, that I got up one morning and after my shower just starting cutting it all off. It was shoulder length and now is earlobe length! Of course it wasn't quite right the first time, so I cut bits off about 4 more times. But everyone says it makes me look younger with it short...but it is now mousy brown/gray instead of honey blonde! I always forget to tell you how I enjoy your notes to yourself written right on your pages!

  25. You are so amazing. I know I couldn't do what you do, sketching and coloring in public - way to go!!!

  26. Love your boat and that building is right on! The taco shop always makes me happy. Congrats on another sale. I've read and re-read and looked at all the photos of your drawings and am always amazed by your talents. :) Happy PPF!

  27. Your boat is fantastic! And I always love to see what and who you've sketched lately. As for the hair bit, funny you should write that you still see a bit of color in the mirror. Long after I stopped coloring my hair and all color had grown out, I could still see blonde hair when I looked in the mirror. It must be the lighting. I know I have gray and white hair, but it still looks blonde to me.

  29. so funny that you were late for your appointment because you were early! Your eating and drawing adventures continue! my hair has been obviously grey for many years. I never considered coloring it. too much work and dont want chemicals up there near my brain. i quite like noticing grey haired women, women who have chosen not to color.

  30. I love that you are moving into boats and buildings as well... such a fun progression... and you did an amazing job on that building... xx

  31. Thanks for capturing and sharing all these moments in your life. The boat is great, very fluid and floaty with the colors and lines. Love it. The gray building is wonderful -- I love gray, it's a complex color and can have bits of sandy brown. Women are more sensitive to hue than men (I'm just sayin') The scene are beautiful and funny as usual. Keep your eyes open and your hair silver.

  33. Great sketches - the boat and the building are fantastic. I have to say I loved that "grumpy" shirt - and bring in your car and we'll find something wrong with it! Sounds like a routine from the very old (dan akroyd, etc) Saturday night live. I rarely stayed up that late but when I did I enjoyed some of the original silliness!

  35. As always I am amazed and inspired! I so want to start getting out and sketching in public places. I guess nothing is really stopping me, huh? Being late for a hair appointment because I was sitting in my car drawing is definitely something I would do. Birds of a feather, I guess :-) Happy PPF! xo, janice

  38. Funny you were late, that would be me! When I read your cell was dead, I threw mine over to the kids to plug in since mine is dead right now..lol Some people have gorgeous grey hair that looks blond. Lucky them!! So you probably aren't far off!!

Love all this new art. Sailboat and building...spectacular! The woman in white could be me when I wore my white jean vest. I rarely wear white either...but always have sunglasses on!! Good job all around!!
