Are you losing money in this huge financial crisis?

Copied off the cover of U.S. News and World Report Oct. 13-20, 2008 for Big Draw Day #16.

What will you do to conserve your funds during this major financial crisis?

How has it affected you so far?

How long do you think it will last?

Who do you think has the best plan to save us from ourselves, Mc Cain or Obama? Why?

  2. Hey Lynn - I just posted a picture of the last debate also, no color and a little bit wierd but I thought of you as I was drawing it.
Financial crisis??? I'm simply holding my breath. we have always been conservative so should be OK in the long run...but the long run has now turned out to be longer than we thought. I was hoping for retirement in 5 years...now I'm thinking 10. Yuck...

  3. Thanks for the drawing of George. I have very little money, no home ownership, no pension etc. I have always lived on the edge so to me, it's just life as usual. I am sorry so many people are upset and worried about losing what they have spent their lives accumulating. It must be hard. I have always been extremely thrifty. After i inherited a small amt of money from a friend I bought books and had massages and became less thrifty. Here with Mom she pays for food so I buy organic, good stuff, luxury foods. I can always revert to the thrifty new englander mode of being-- though with some regret. So far it all hasnt effected me. Now, I wont go into a rant about the things we/and lending agencies did to get us here. If we all had the mental set of not buying things unless we could pay cash, then a lot of this would not have occurred. I feel we are manipulated by the kooky way we have set up consumerism in this country. We are happy when stocks or whatever go up and sad the next day when they go down and happy the next day...it is like living with an alcoholic manic/depressive. But i have only my subjective feelings on this and i know the majority do not feel this way. IE if you cant pay cash don't buy it.

No one person can save us. We project a "father" image(Daddy will take care of us) onto the president and then we are disappointed when they turn out to be human ordinary men. There is no rescue from outside of ourselves. Very Buddhist actually. We must take responsibility for ourselves, be grown up and know that no one person is a "savior" for us or anyone. As Pema says,it is in the rub between what is and what we wish is that we grow up.

I think some spiritual perspectives and spirituality might help here. Focus on the present moment and not some projected fears about what the future might bring.

  4. Great rendition of George. As to your questions. The main impact for us is the DH was planning on retiring in June but since we lost so much money in the stock market that may have to be delayed. Since I voted for Obama that should tell you how I feel there.

I would love it you did Nanowrimo too and yes you can do it. I have another blog for people participating so if you decide to send me an email so I can send you an invite.

  6. Well, watching less news could be good advice, at least to take breaks so as not to become overloaded and overwhelmed.
However, I can't put my head in the sand either.

I, like Suki, believe we should only buy what we can afford now...not run up big credit card bills. Lately that has gotten harder to do. Just as house needs more repairs and I decided to work less and go on a months long vacation. That was a 1st and a last! ;-(

But living that close to the edge would give me ulcers I think. I know how to save and to conserve...but like Mim's DH, I too have to put off the idea of retirement. Way off!
It's just scary...trying to stay in the moment and not freak out about it. I've been poor before...I know how to do it...I just had hoped...at this stage in my life I wouldn't have to.

  7. It's not the "things" for me. I could easily do away with big house etc (more on that in a minute) but its about health insurance for me and DH. for us that is the big kicker! We're talking kidney transplant maintainance!!! Big bucks!

on the house - we bought our first house with interest rates at 17.75%so we put down over 50% on a tiny house. I wanted a bigger house with land, but we would have had to have a much larger mortgage at a crazy rate, so we scaled back. Why can't people do that now?? why does the first house have to be the "trophy" house? I just don't get it!
    Rant over!

  9. Aloha Lynn,
    Digging the sketch..George looks worried..
What will you do to conserve your funds during this major financial crisis?
I gave up my unnescessary stuff, like coffees out, memberships and subscribing to stuff. Saving over $100 a month.

How has it affected you so far?
I watch my accounts like a hawk to make sure that my money stays there.

How long do you think it will last?
    At least 12 months.

Who do you think has the best plan to save us from ourselves, Mc Cain or Obama? Why?
Only we can save us from ourselves, but I'd choose Obama because I like his economic advisers, that include Jim Kramer and Warren Buffett.

    Peace, Kai

  10. What a great 'George'. I tend not to worry about paper loses and definitely live within my means.

  11. It sure sounds like as a whole we are a wise group of wo(men)...waiting of the men to chime in here...and we are frugal to a fault. That's the good news.
Kai, I believe it's going to last longer than a year. I am hearing 5-10 years out. That keeps me in my office chair to age 78 at the worst and 73 at the earliest. I suppose, G_d willing, I could do either...if I have to. And then if I can save more between then and now and not live on every penny. That is the question. I just hope I have all my mental and physical faculties in tact by then. It's about the age my mom''s dementia hit. But I'm not going to have that right????? LOL
And if I do at least I won't know any better..............In the meantime, it's live each moment as if it's my last and enjoy life to the fullest within my means.

  12. I didn't have any money in real estate nor in the stock market, so my funds are still at the same value. Oddly, before this all happened I felt silly for having my savings in...just a plain vanilla savings account. Now I don't feel so silly. It's almost as safe as my mattress.
