Portraits of Best Friends in Fabric

What did you do this weekend? I bought a few books, studied them, chose an idea and ran with it. On Saturday I learned how to layer fabric and fusible web and to cut out photos and pick shades in light, medium and dark fabrics to construct portraits of myself and my friend Patty. (You saw us in my Friday post in case you want to compare these to the photos I cropped). Sunday night at 9 PM I finished the top sewing and satin stitch borders on each. Now I am tired! ;-) And I know why. But it sure was fun. The book is The Quilting Arts Book by Patricia Bolton. The article is "Making Portraits" by Maria Elkins on pages 122-125.

  1. So do you use a photo and cover it with material? These are fantastic. and look just like you both. Superb work.

  3. One thing I love about your art, Lynn. You are always trying new things. These are wonderful. I like the focus on the eyes and top of the head. The fabrics you used work wonderfully.

  9. These are fantastic. I'm impressed. What do you do with them after? Frame them? Hang them up? Make a bag? Give them to Patti as a gift?

  10. Elspeth, I have not yet decided how to "frame" these portraits.
Perhaps on a whole cloth, perhaps in a wooden frame(s), not yet sure. But I am making more and want a collection of them to make it into a show at the art gallery sometime!!!! A third one will appear here tomorrow. Stay tuned!

  13. Yes, the series would be great as an exhibition on their own (quilt portraits). I hope you find a simple and effective way of framing them that enhances and does justice.
