A Week Early, But Happy Birthday Son Anyway

My first born, my son, is a die hard grateful dead fan! Has been for many years! So the tye-dyed fabric I found at the yard sale on Saturday was perfect for his rather over sized birthday post card. I free motion sewed the peace sign and spiky lines that are now under his head first, and then I set to hand embroider it all. Seed stitches and back stitches throughout
and then beads of course. I love that I am using all the materials I get at the thrift store. These beads have gone into several recent projects, a small bag full I got for $2 and there are still tons more!
Dan has been a real advocate for peace his entire adult life. He marched in the Great American Peace March in the 80's from California to Washington DC. (I have the tennis shoes he wore on that walk). He marched again in Russia with the same group. He protested at many a anti nuclear plant rally with babies in arms. And now he is creating the Green March for a healthier planet. If you would like to know more about Dan and what his team is doing go here!
I free hand embroidered the words and his head. I looked at a photo of him to do the face. I can see a little of the real guy in there...but you have to squint just right to see him. He has a wonderful spirit and soul. Happy Birthday Dan!

  4. That material you got at the yard sale was the perfect backdrop for the peace sign you made. This sounds like my kind of project and Dan sounds like my kind of guy. I would march for peace and a cleaner planet any day. That's the reason behind my Earth Month celebration, too. Super lovely birthday gift. I'm sure he'll love it.
