Twenty Seven Years Ago Today

We went to Mendocino, CA to make an honest couple of ourselves. After living in sin for seven years I asked him to marry me. And three days later he showed me his answer on the fridge. Kids colorful plastic alphabet letters all bunched together with YES spelled out in the middle.

We had an appointment with the justice of the peace in Fort Bragg, 5 miles up the road from our B & B in Mendocino.  We were told to wait in the hallway, sitting in overstuffed leather chairs held together with silver duct tape.

In the meantime the judge finished his morning duties and went out to lunch forgetting he has an appointment with us! We waited and waited and finally asked and the secretary called all over town looking for him...finally he came back and married us in his chambers. He told me that if DH wasn't good to me to look him up again. I never had to do that.

We walked across the street, and I reached in my pocket, grabbed some rice I'd put there earlier and threw it at my new husband!

We went into a hardware store and bought two cups.
Twenty seven years later we still have one of them.
We drove back to Mendocino and went to the ice cream parlor that was there then, bought big ice cream cones and told the guy scooping it up that we were just married!

We drove down the coast to home to the telephone ringing off the hook. We had sent out announcements that we had run off to make an honest couple of ourselves and people were calling to see if it was true or was it an April Fool's joke!

We were then and are now
Just a Couple of April Fools!
