Good Eats

Continuing my self reporting, record keeping as I change my eating habits, for myself, to watch my progress, and to share for anyone else who might be interested. (first report was my April 7th, 2013 post)

On the weekend I found this book at a thrift store in Davis for a dollar. Packed full of information which will be helpful in reassuring me I am getting all the vitamins and minerals and other important nutriants I need from the foods I am eating. The book authors cover everything from being "semi-vegetarian" while eating a little meat and fish to being vegetarian and eating eggs and milk (dairy) (ova) to being vegan or being macrobiotic. I think right now, so far I am leaning toward being vegan. (no meat, no dairy) But I leave an open door to add and subtract as I go, as this is a learning process for me.

It's nice to learn that I am in good company as some quotes in the book about vegetarianism are written by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Ben Franklin, Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Schweitzer and Albert Einstein. Not bad company at all!

My days have been starting the same for a few weeks now with either cooked STEEL OATS or ROLLED OATS. I usually add a sliced organic banana or half an apple, or blue berries, and dried figs cut up, with chopped almonds or walnuts and a sprinkle of cinnamon. I have cooked it in water and in Almond "Milk" which is a non-dairy product.

It's very filling and more than easily holds me till lunch time.

On Sunday we went to three different grocery stores in Davis, as they have a Whole Foods, a CO-OP and a Nugget there. I liked the Whole Foods store best. We have a Nugget here in town and I can get most of what I want here, but it was fun to see an even wider selection of produce and grains/legumes in bins at WF.

Since the weather was warm to hot this past week I ate a lot of salads!

And I eat a mix of vegetables and grains. The photo below is Quinioa and Edemame (shelled soy beans)

Tonight for dinner I stir fried half a yellow onion, cut up fresh ginger, a clove of garlic, in a little olive oil, added long thin slices of yellow and red bell peppers, a cup of red kidney beans I had previously cooked and frozen, frozen soy beans, some broccoli flowers (tops), and then added previously cooked brown rice. It was a perfection of proteins and vitamins. And it was very very good.

So the good news is so far I am enjoying every meal. And I have no cravings for the foods I am no longer eating.

Dessert might be a couple of organic dates or an orange, or maybe those fresh organic raspberries I bought on Sunday.

I am also trying to be faithful to my treadmill and small weights workouts. I know I get inspired to do so and am good for a while and then I slack off. I am hopeful I can just keep it going this time, as I remind myself how energized it makes me and how good I feel from doing so.

  2. Oh Lynn what a small world... I met Brenda Davis when our kids took a little course together and then met to play twenty years ago.She had just written the book and we did lunch while our kids were in their class....She gradually became vegan after being a vegetarian for several years!! Such a nice woman I think she is still a nutritionist/ dietitian here in B.C. Her writing partner Vesanto guided Bryan Adam on his quest to become a vegan.I saw the book on my google reader under your blog and recognized it immediately! I bought a few copies for some friends. I even had her speak about her book at our writers group many years ago!! She once brought an awesome no bake cookies to the beach...not sure if the recipe is in there but it would be awesome for your grandchildren even a nice treat for company!!

  5. How do you always find just what you are into at the right moment at the Thrift stores.. You always do you know. Glad you found something good for you. I was in the market the other day and some one was giving a lecture to a group of people on Mushrooms and how really good they are for us but she said its more beneficial to cook or saute them and not eat them raw. She said why but Con said something to me at that moment and I missed it. Would be interesting to find out why.

    1. Yes, I would like to know that. I do both, saute them with other veggies and I eat them raw in salads. Wonder what heat does to them that is beneficial?

And yes, I know I have always always been super fortunate in finding just what I "need" at a given time in a thrift store. This week it was that book, and a sketchbook kit I found brand new for a buck fifty and will give to my daughter in law for her birthday, as she is recently coming back to drawing.

  6. you are an inspiration. Just wondering if you are spending more time cooking with this change of diet? It looks so delicious but looks like a lot of work?

    1. Only in that my husband did all our cooking before my switch. So me cooking for me is more.
But no, I don't think making a veggie/grainy dish takes more time than our previous grilled or baked dishes, plus sides of veggies.
Tonight I made a big salad, and cut up an apple and opened a jar of peanut butter for dessert.
I cook rice and beans on the weekend so they are ready
To eat with stir fry veggies.
None of this takes much time.

  8. these are big changes. i was glad to read you added protein to the salad in the form of beans and rice. i find it very hard to get my 50 grams of protein per day. good luck.
