I have the honor of being quoted today in Seth Apters "The Pulse" on his blog The Altered Page.
I hope you will hop on over there to see not only what I said about What great artist from anytime in history  I'd choose to learn from and why; but who many others have chosen and what they said as well.

Yesterday, our nephew Allen flew in from MN for auditions for Yale and ACT in SF. We went into the City to meet him there for support. I drew in the car on the way down. Interesting journal pages done while car was in motion. (painted later in the evening at home).

We met up with Allen who had auditioned in the morning for Yale and ACT's masters programs in Drama and was awaiting possible call backs from them both. We went on to David's Deli for lunch while Allen went to see if he was on the list or not. He came back to let us know that out of sixty actors only one was chosen, a woman.
"They said they had their quota for male actors already, but to try again next year." The last part of that sentence was promising that he had done well and should try again. My understanding is that Meryl Streep went through six auditions before being accepted into the same program. I guess they wanted a woman that year too. It's a hard business to break into.

In the meantime, Allen has been accepted to volunteer as assistant director at the esteemed Guthrey Theater in Minneapolis, MN. This will add to his resume and give him the opportunity to work with important people in the field.

We spent a fun evening  talking and playing  Spite and Malice. Tomorrow he'll go on back home. I'm glad we got to spend this much time together. And I will keep my fingers crossed for next year as I'd sure love to have him studying in San Francisco so we could enjoy his company even more.

  2. Love your sketches. They give a real sense of the journey.

Bravo to Allen for trying out!! Being ambitious. Stretching his boundaries. That is what youth is all about.

A couple stories about both Yale and ACT. In college, shy me was a "hit" in dramatic roles in theater. When I lived in SF I signed up to audition for ACT which was brand new at that time. You had to memorize a comic monologue and a tragic monologue from Shakespeare. In the end, I didnt go to the audition. Not sure if it was for a master's program. Too long ago to remember.

But if I could choose any program it would be Yale. My dad went to Yale. Wonder if that would have helped. There i never did apply as I had poor grade points. But lots of famous actors come out of Yale.

best of luck to allen in MN.

    1. Suki, thanks, and I love both your stories. How exciting that you even considered auditioning for ACT. He'd be happy with either schools acceptance! He will try again next year.

  4. I had trouble getting your comments to show up. My ISP must be slower than slow today. At least your nephew will be able to add to his resume and can use the time to interact with others like him and do a bit of networking, too. Congrats on Seth's master class entry today.

    1. Marianne. I am right on top with three other artists liking Vincent Van Gogh. I think my name is a bit darker than the others. I didn't see it at first either. ;-)
