Color Washes From Paint Set to Sweat Shirt

I am drawing in a new small journal with thin brown paper pages. I thought I'd draw my set of transparent watercolours by Talens. These have served me well. I bought them at a garage sale unused for $2. But they retail for nearly $50. You can get them on Amazon for $20ish. My box is much more paint caked dirty than this looks.
There are 12 MORE colors in this tin.
I only drew one half of them.
I'm almost out of "flesh color". What color(s) do you mix to get "flesh"?
the 'holes' denote usage
I drew the paints just looking at them on my desk.

I drew this self portrait from a photo my husband took of me at Crater Lake in July.

I am wearing that very cool sweatshirt with all the hand embroidery and dyed cloth made by women in Nepal.
I just fell in love with it when I saw it.
It was fun to paint too.

I'm sharing this with Paint Party Friday (tomorrow)
which you can follow from the icon on my sidebar (top).

So it's drawn with black XS Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Pen,
then painted with the Talon's watercolors.
Some color added with Sharpie Ultra Fine point pens in
blue, green, lime green, red, orange and purple.
Yep! That's me!
I'd say this self portrait flatters me.
;-)
What the hey?!

  2. You were so lucky to get those paints that cheap Lynn...wayhay! I would be so excited to have found them for that price. Your self portrait does look like you too, there is a definite likeness going on there...well done. For flesh tone, and probably unusually, I actually find Burnt Sienna does the trick...being watercolour it obviously gets paler when it is dry, but if you water it down a little too, basically adjust it as you feel, then it will end up as near to a flesh tone as you will ever need. Give it a try and let me know what you think.

  5. Wonderful sketches Lynn, love the one of you.
To get flesh color I usually mix burnt sienna or brown with a bit of white and maybe a touch of yellow. Play around with it, but I use oils not water color so I am not sure how that would work.
    Love to Henry.

  6. Wonderful sketches Lynn. This is a cute book of You paintings. Something different. Fun. Love the drawing of you. Yes I agree with Annie.. but then I have used Oils for years and know them best. but would imagine colors are the same no matter what. Happy PPF early. :)

  7. Oh BTW.. I was trained that Flesh paint is never used for skin tones as not everyones flesh is the same..Artist should always mix a skin tone flesh color.

  8. What a fun pair of drawings, they made me smile :o)
As for skin tones, I guess it can work in watercolor as well: red/brick, yellow and white with lots of water. I haven't dome watercolors in a long time!

  10. Great painting Lynn! I agree with everyone that " flesh tone" is very variable. I use white, red and yellow mixed in varying proportions to get colors that I like. Diffenent yellows and different reds make for some great combos.

    Have fun

  19. Love your self-portrait! I also really really really love your sweatshirt! I saw something bright like that, but got talked out of it by my girls. Next time I won't listen to them--

With acrylics, I use combos of yellow ocher, Payne's gray, alizarin crimson, and white for skin. As you can see on my blog, with watercolors I tend to use yellow ocher and blue, which makes for green skin. Lots of green-skinned watercolor girls over here!

I love kraft colored paper. I've never painted on it, though, just used colored pencils--I like how this looks!

  21. I love your self portrait! And I want one of those sweatshirts very badly! For flesh, mix a yellow and a red with lots of water for watercolor or with lots of white for acrylic or oils. Different reds and yellows will give different looks but all will be fleshy. Cooler reds usually work best.

  25. I love your sweatshirt! For watercolours I use a combination of crimson and yellow ochre with a bit of white and some browns or blues as I need them, depending on the skin shade I need. I just mix a bit of this, and a bit of that until I get the shade I want, but I usually tend to start with a touch of crimson and yellow ochre and then mix it with white as a base.
