More Hyde St. Pier SF Folk Festival Paintings Part II

Last Saturday we went to the San Francisco Hyde Street Pier Annual Sea Music Festival.  My husband comes from a long line of tall ship captains (great grandfather and grandfather and uncles) who sailed out of Nova Scotia. In his 20's he came across shanty songs in a book and became hooked.  He sings very well and plays guitar so when ever this kind of music is on the horizon we go.

I drew and listened, sometimes drawing faster than usual as the music became more intense and spirited. The musicians on hand were all very talented and it was a joy to be there.

Since we have been going to Sea Shanty song fests for over 30 years we now see people there who we knew there 30 yrs ago. We are always surprised at how much they have aged. They must think the same of us. ;-) It was heartening to see lots of young blood among the musicians this year. Makes it a surety that this music will survive.

I had fun with this last page turning it around as I drew which sort of signifies the turning of the sounds in the room on the deck of the historical ship "The Eureka".

If you want to see the other three pages I drew there (we were there from 10 in the morning till 5 PM) go back to Monday's post! And photos can be seen on Wednesday's post.

Sharing this with Paint Party Friday tomorrow~ too; visit other artists work via the icon on my sidebar. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for your comments, they mean the world to me.

  1. Isn't it funny how other people age and we all manage to think that we look the same? So funny. How nice that you've been going to this for 30 years, you must have seen so many changes yet the songs remain the same. Sounds like alot of fun

  8. These are fantastic! My Son in law would love jamming with your hubby!! Although he loves every genre of music, folk is his favorite and what he writes and plays most!! My daughters dad hails from N.S. so when the kids were back there they loved my SIL's singing and playing. He'd love to go back one day and play all the little pubs!!

Very cool hubby's family sailed the tall ships..!! Your place seems as creative as mine!!
    Happy ppf!!

  10. I love this. I'd love to go to San Francisco (with flowers in my hair!) it's on my bucket list. It sounds like you had a great time and how wonderful you've been going for so long. I guess we always imagine we look just the same until we see how our peers have gotten so much older and realise we have too!

  14. It's been a while since we went to San Fran. Last we went to Fisherman's Wharf for dinner. I want to go to the musuem and see Diego Rivera's work. Love what you've done with your sketches. You always take me there when seeing your drawings. How fun the way you capture what you see. Glad you had a great time. Yes in answer to your question for Day of the Dead, we do celebrate our loved ones now gone. Thank you for asking and thx for your kind comments.

  15. Curious about your art process...do you draw in ink and then fill in with marker or water colors? What ink do you use...what type of ink pen I mean?

  16. Kathy, yes, I draw in ink first. I use Zig, Farber-Castell PITT artist pens and Sharpie Ultra fine pens in various sizes from XS to .O8 or so. Then I use simple watercolors. (flat cakes rather than tubes of paint).
