The Whole Enchalada

I drew this on Labor Day, as my husband sat in his chair, do all men have a "their chair?" and read a book about bears! He liked the drawing because I reduced his weight... totally by accident.

A week ago on Tuesday I drew at Taco Jalico's as I am want to do...Carlos' aunt waited on me...she always remembers to bring me lime for my water and food. Once she forgot to give me a straw, but I have forgiven her.

I showed her this drawing of her. She was not happy with the plumpness of her face. Sorry. I think it's a good likeness. What to do?
I guess she would have preferred I'd drawn her slimmer too.

That very tall man was VERY TALL. I wonder if the other guy found him attractive?
I mean look how he is checking him out!!!!
I only draw what I see.

A week later from the Tuesday I drew this next picture I framed and gave a print of it to Carlos! He had said he wanted it when he saw me drawing it last week. You should have seen him. He squatted down next to where I was sitting ( last Tuesday); he gasped, told me he LOVED IT! And then said he thought he was going to cry! I said you are not going to cry. He said, you are right. I can't cry at work!

He then went to show it to his dad and Charlie who were in the kitchen cooking and who are in the picture in the kitchen cooking...You should have seen the HUGE SMILES on their faces when they looked at themselves in the drawing! His dad looked up, saw me sitting mid restaurant, and gave a thumbs up, yelling "It's GREAT!" Now you better believe that made my day!

This past Tuesday when I gave Carlos the framed print of him at the cash register I drew the policeman in this next drawing/painting. He kept looking at me. I wondered if I could be arrested for drawing a policeman while he was eating his lunch. His friend had a gun strapped to his belt. When the policeman stood up I saw he also had a gun, a huge black gun, sticking out of it's holster. I guess we were all being protected. I'd rather think that than alternate possible violent thoughts that come to mind thinking of guns.

The feathers in the background are in a vase on the counter, it is not a head dress the policeman was wearing no matter what your eyes tell you!

Carlos came by and said why does the woman only have half a face?...I said because that is all I can see of her from here. I did not want to draw the large woman sitting across from her. I thought the picture was better this way. Later that evening when I was painting it my husband asked the same question. He got the same answer.

The policeman becomes #14 in the 29 Faces in September Challenge...

And the woman is # 1/2 giving me a total of 14 and a half faces to date!

Later a young woman came in to have lunch and she was not in uniform, but she too had a gun strapped to her belt.

You might like to know that there is a police station, I think for family issues, next door to Taco Jalisco's. I guess they have to eat somewhere.

  6. Lynn, the more I get to know you, the more I learn that you don't *just capture slices of life* at Jalisco's and other places....you have a FANTASTIC sense of humour and it spills out into your words! The sketch of the Policemen (with feathers) just cracked me up - but your words made me laugh out loud!

Your *slimmer* DH sketch is also fantastic...love that Bear Book!

Carlos should buy all of the Jalisco's drawings and frame one wall with them!!!

    Love,

    ♥ Robin ♥

  7. Congrats on Artist of the Week. As an artist, that is exactly what I thought (that you could only see 1/2 her face). We paint what we see. These people and places are fun. Yep, thanks for telling me there is a police station down the street. Sometimes I do that that everyone carries nowadays. . . perhaps they do. . . but. . . . Blessings, Janet PPF

  10. Hello Granny Lynn, I am new at PPF. Well, actually i haven't even joined in yet, but i read your interview and wow! i really love your sketches. I also believe one can become an artist any time and at any age. I started learning how to draw and paint when i was 38. That was ten years ago. Your sketches really inspire me. I remember 4 years ago, i drew a quick sketch of a mom and her baby at a Jungle Gym Playground. It was just rough sketch in pencil on a piece of paper i found in my bag. But when i gave it to her, her smile like literally brightened the whole place! I moved back to my table and when i looked back, i saw her showing it to her husband and they were all love! Then they both came to me and said they'll put it in the baby album. Isn't that wonderful! How a simple sketch shared can open the box where happiness is kept. I have not done that again, but i think i will...

  12. Grandma Lynn!! I absolutely enjoyed your interview very much! I am very inspired at how you started to draw and how you dance with your fears. I also love to draw on location and i learn from you that we should do it everyday wherever we are.. that is a wonderful habit no? Love your series of drawings and colors and stories today. I enjoy it! Btw, I apologized for not being able to start with the painting for the giveaway as I am way too busy with my projects. Trust me I am working on it. Take care and God bless!

  16. So much fun to read your interview on PPF, Lynn. Very inspiring to think I could also draw without pencil or eraser! I laughed over the getting food on the sketches, too! Can't wait to see your book(s). Will you use Blurb? I must say your writing and drawings made me "feel" you were about 35 years old...art does keep you young!

  18. Congrats on your wonderful featured artist interview today. I enjoy so much the little glimpse into life in your town each week and the fabulous illustrations you do. How interesting that you are going to self publish a book of those drawings - perhaps your town library might buy some from you or the local information centre? I'm sure folk would be interested to see if they might feature! I laughed at the idea that the policeman might be wearing a feather head dress!!

  23. Loved reading your interview in PPF and am such a fan of your "in the hood" art. My husband has "his chair" too -- it is oversized, leather, and takes up way too much space in our living room. I fantasize about getting rid of it.... Happy PPF!

  27. Lynn, you know how much I admire your style of painting. I say so every week. These paintings are delightful and very much alive. I particularly like the one of your dh in his chair. Yes, I think all men have a special chair. I also like it that he thought it was nice, too. Sometimes spouses are the toughest critics.
