Playground ... Before And After

On Sunday I walked down to the playground again. There were children climbing on this huge play structure. One little boy making me particularly nervous, as he insisted on climbing on the OUTSIDE of the structure that has all those bars on it to keep kids SAFE inside of it. But no, he was barefoot and he climbed up it like a monkey to the very top over and over again. Probably a good twelve feet or more off the ground.
His grandfather sat on a bench far from where he was to do any good, as if he might catch him if he fell anyway, saying softly "be careful, be careful".

I sat and silently prayed and drew!
Luckily for all concerned the kid did not fall or get hurt.

I drew this in ink then I filled it in with my new colored pencils dry.

Later that evening when I was home I added water with my paint brush bringing the colors more alive!

You may have noticed that this art journal has spirals at both sides. I found it at a thrift store for $2.99. The pages overlap one from one side then one from the other. A strange arrangement for a book, but I liked that about it. It was different! I'm not sure what quality the paper is. It's thick. Not watercolor paper but it accepted water just fine. I think I am going to have fun filling it up.

  1. What a difference in the brilliance of color when you put water to the pencils. I don't know how you could have concentrated watching a boy be a boy doing dangerous things. yikes.. This is well done tho.

    1. It wasn't easy Cris. I was really worried, but didn't think it my place to say anything when his parent or grandparent was right there watching.

  3. That's one very unusual sketchbook having two spirals. Never come across that before! It's amazing how the water added to the pages altered the colour so much, very good.

    1. I found it unusual too Ann, and I too had never seen anything like it before. That's why I decided to try it. The price was sure right, only $2.99.

    1. Yes, the water seems to wash away the pencil strokes.

  5. You are such an observer of life! That's quite a structure you captured! I never saw such a sketchbook, with 2 sides. I recently read in a Danny Gregory book, An Illustrated Life, about a journal artist who each time she's ready, she picks a new sketchbook or journal book. Other journaling artists use the same book each time & have uniform volumes on their shelves. I am of the pick a different book each time & it's so interesting how each type of paper reacts with my pens & colors.

    1. Well, I have done both. I find one I like and I get it again and again. Then I find another I try and like and I buy more of those. This one I believe will be one of a kind. So my collection is a hodge podge of book styles and sizes thus far.

  7. The kid was just doing his kidlike thing, but I would have been so anxious for the kid and his grandfather too! You captured quite an impressive play structure. I've never seen a sketchbook like that, but I am looking forward to seeing what you put in it!
