This week I drew, and Today We Remember ...

At Sketchbook Skool we are under the tutelage of Cathy Johnson, a wonderful naturalist artist, writer and teacher. This page is from one of her lessons, plus one of my favorite burrowing owls from a photo I took a while back.

Our lives often include live music. Last Saturday night we went to a local farm in our valley and listened to a fav trio. They had added a bass player for the evening. My husband used to teach with the male guitarist/singer.

Two of the women sitting in front of me turned out to be artists too. One approached me when she saw me sketching.

On Sunday we went to visit Uncle Harry. He has added to his plate of grief, since his dear wife of 69 years, my aunt Mimi, died in May. He's now also lost his two sisters, the youngest, just a few days before we got there. So the visit was a mixture of sad and happy time.
I drew this first drawing after lunch when Harry had fallen asleep in his chair back in his room. He had one eye open and one closed. Tricky, but he can do it.

I love that he lets me draw him. He was wide awake for this one.

Then back in Sketchbook Skool I was still using my owl photos to draw birds, which was part of the homework.

As I said before I love these burrowing owls. Some of you may remember the photo I got of these two, which I called "The Loving Couple". It was in a juried art show last year.
Now I have it on a sketch too. And I've added it to my Zazzle shop where you can put it on a mug or t-shirt or card, etc. Zazzle.com/Lynnc1 is my shop url.

Today I went to Tacos Jalisco for lunch where I drew these two gals. I thought it was funny that one of the women was holding her fork and knife this way. So I turned it into a cartoon.

Woman #1: "I'm ambride-knife and fork-terous!"
Woman #2: "Yeah? Kool!"

It's rare to see people at TJ's on their cell phones. When this couple came in her body language initially was to lean forward toward the guy as if to engage him in conversation, and he reached across the table as if to touch her hand or arm, but before he actually got there she had pulled out her phone and was looking down at it. I could only imagine his disappointment, and after a few minutes, he too pulled out his phone, and before I knew it, both were in other worlds looking at screens, not at each other.

Some of you may recall this portrait I did of my friend Patty. July 31, 2013 was the day she died.
Bringing to an end our 73 year friendship. Well, she is still my best friend.  I think of her every day, and I can be found talking to her too from time to time. I wear a piece of jewelry Patty gave me every day, not always the same one, I mix them up, but always something from her, to keep her close.
Just needed to share that today.

"I love you Patty"
"I know you do Lynnie, I love you too!"
"Friends Forever, Today, Tomorrow, Always"

Animal Wednesday: Henry Says Hi and Oh Look At All This Local Wildlife!

As you might expect Henry was quite miffed at us for being left at the Pet Hotel for yet another five day stint when we took off for Oregon over the July 4th long weekend. (a mere week between that trip and our two week road trip prior) He barely looked at us when we went to pick him up, hid in fact behind some boards in the room...he's warming up more now since it's been a while at home. But he becomes skittish if we even look or act like we might be going somewhere, then he skedaddles quickly upstairs to hide. But he is here today to wish you all a happy Animal Wednesday!
These animals were found on our day out and about last Saturday...we live about five miles from where we found these chickens in a friendly man's backyard (DH was looking over his tools for sale in his ultra neat garage, while I perused his livestock...)
We drove down a country road spying this fellow on his horse. He got further and further away but the 24x optical zoom on my new camera caught up with him anyway... That's a field of sunflowers on his left.
This guy down another road just stood and stared me down!
I like how my camera focused on the wire fence and left the livestock a blur in the background.
Looks like a nice painting to me, no?
This graceful ostrich found some shade to cool off in.
I never cease to be amazed at who we find in our neighborhood.
This of course is one of our beloved burrowing owls...a young one.
And this, is NOT an animal but looks like it might be a goose; a kind woman sold it to me for ten cents freshly picked that morning from her garden! We ate it for dinner and it was delicious.
;-)
Happy Animal Wednesday!

Sunny, Busy, Fun Weekend!

On Saturday we got up early to head out to enjoy ourselves together .... stopping first to check on the burrowing owls. We only saw two, but I'd not brought my camera with the best zoom so this shot is a bit blurry...my apologies...Trust me she and her baby were very very cute...
On our drive out in the country side we came across this little herd of baby llamas...furry and cute too...
and trees laden down with California oranges...
We passed these cyclists thinking of Mim and her DH...
and this bucolic scene...
Finally coming to a good garage sale where I was offered a box of goodies for $2. I'd spied some thread inside and was digging for it when the woman said I could have the whole box for two bucks...when I got it home I found fifty spools of thread, most full and of good quality.
I figure I have here about $150 worth of thread.
Also in same box are twelve rolls of pretty ribbons some with prices of $12 on them!
There were sewing machine needles the kind I use on my machine; pin cushions, something I needed, and much much more.
Saturday night we did something we have not done in many years.
We went to see a movie at the theater!
DH wanted to see True Grit on the big screen.
We had recently watched the original with John Wayne on TV and were glad
to see they stuck to the story closely; and were even better in the costume department. Except for a pair of furry chaps one cowhand was wearing, which DH happened to know had not been made for quite a few years later in history! I swear, he could be a consultant for the historical aspects of films. The one thing neither of us enjoyed was sitting up close and feeling like the splattered blood was landing on us as well as the person being shot on the screen. We prefer
the old cowboy movies without blood.
You know you are getting old when the prices of movies shocks you!
This was a matinee (4:45 PM) and bargain and senior prices was $7.50~
We saw a family with three kids come in and they had to have paid $37 and the popcorn we got, size medium was $6.50! I didn't ask what he paid for the soda.
Well, when I was a little girl movies were 25 cents and popcorn ten cents!
I don't remember paying more than $4 max as an adult.
So I guess it HAS been a while! *************************************************
At home on Sunday I found two of my daffodils had bloomed open!
And two crows were having a very loud conversation on top of our two redwood trees!
and this is our winter temperature on Sunday!
I hope your weekend went well too.
And wishing you a good week ahead.
I started a new quilt, and I finished another book by Jodi Picoult.
(I'll review it in my side bar) HCM

Owls, Buzzards, Llamas, Horses, Scarecrows All on an Animal Wednesday!

One of the perks living where we live is that on a lazy garage sale Saturday we can drive a few short miles (I mean literally a few blocks past the last residential area) and find WILD LIFE literally at our back door. You already are well acquainted with our burrowing owls who live right off the golf course that is across the street from the local car dealerships. and they have a birds eye view (sorry, couldn't help myself there)...
of the buzzards that are flying around just outside the city limits...
past this tree that looked like a painting to us...very Impressionistic, don't you agree?
This mom and baby drew our attention over to the side of the road so I could get out and snap this photo...
...and then we came upon the most delightful surprise of all...
this little herd of young, small llamas...
and let me tell you they were as curious about us as we were of them...
Are they not just the cutest things you have ever seen (besides your grandchildren maybe?)
I loved their stylish hair cuts. Thought they could be on stage with all the kids on American Idol.
(addition: I think my llamas are alpacas...I just did a Google search to see the differences and alpacas are these small guys, and llamas are much larger. The latter raised as pack animals and the former for their fur/yarn. Or so a weaver on another blog said.) and last but not least was this dancing gal, who I believe she could be heard to say she was auditioning for "So you think you can dance!" Look for her! I think she'll do great.
Happy Animal Wednesday to all of you.
What critters did you meet up with this week? PS
No photo of Henry V today
or his latest
KILL
!
Too bloody, and too gory.
If you are eating breakfast, lunch or dinner while reading this stop now!
He left me a decapitated rat
at our front doorstep
and I had to hose down the walkway
after disposing of the poor creatures parts.
Now go look at the llamas again to get that image out of your head
and I will too.
