First Collage Class Tonight

I am just in from my first ever collage class. Taught at the Art Center downtown, around the corner from my office. Got done with last clients at 6PM, had time to eat quickly (a fruit salad and roll with cream cheese I'd got at lunch time for my dinner).
Then drove the block to the place, the teacher just pulled up when I did. Her name is Joanne and she is a young woman, graduate of art college in 2002. I was her only student tonight and think I was her first there, as all the media we used was brand new. New water soluble crayons, new water soluble colored pencils. The acrylics were not new.

I had fun playing after a long day at the office. I started a collage so will go again next Monday night to do the painting layers with her supervision. I guess I could do this at home but there I don't have to clean up the mess.
Anyway, it was a fun introduction for me to paint brushes, gel, crayons and paints. Not sure I've ever made a collage before! Not recently that is for sure.
This is the finished first stage after gluing all to the canvas.
Below is the first step laying out papers, tearing paper, layering on a piece of canvas. Followed by my first ever painting palate!
Cris, get out your paint brushes and attack the colored pencil work. They are the lighter colors on the left of the "color palate" above. The water soluable crayons bring out darker colors and the acrylics the darkest of all. See, I am learning.

  2. Hi Lynn, GREAT, congrats from me too! I like it that you can make a mess there, sometimes this sets things free that we do not dare to set free at home - (cause we try to spare the carpet or the table etc from paint:)
Can't see pictures neither, only little red crosses...
    Have a good day

Is there a theme that you do or do you just start doing? looks like it is on a canvas. Nice you were her only student. you get more attention. but not nice for her tho.
Not sure what you meant about the colored pencils. could you explain a bit more.. takes awhile to get into my head. LOL.
Thanks for sharing. Cant wait for your drawing course and the finished College.

  6. Cris, you had mentioned earlier that you had not tried adding water to your colored pencil drawings. Perhaps you have now. We did in the class last night and I, the novice that I am, was surprised to see how they turned to paint!!!!

  7. No theme. I was told to bring photos so I brought my dragon fly photos. Started from there and she gave very little direction, just said do whatever I wanted to do. This is what came from that. I had no idea what I was doing, where I was going, was tired from work, and just started playing with the papers she had available to choose from. And so it went.

  8. Really? no never have tried water.. But would that work on sketchbooks? I will have to try it. thanks for sharing. Did she use any special brands of the colored pencils? I know they are supposed to have some sort of tool with liquid inside it to smooth the pencils. probably this would be the same thing but cheaper. hmmmm Tanks.

  9. Art is supposed to relax you. so if you were tired I bet by getting into your Right brain mode you were more relaxed after working and slept well last night. It is amazing what does come out of us that we dont know is in there.. good job. cant wait to see it done. This is really inspiring for me and what I do too. I could do mixed media with my oils too.

  11. I was talking to a friend here and She said that the prismacolors have a watercolor set of colored pencils also which might be what your teacher is using. I saw them in Michaels when I got mine. Maybe should have got them. I will still try mine out.

  14. Your conversations make me smile too :-) Lucky for you to be the only one there (I wonder how the teacher felt, being newly qualified too!) Glad you are having fun.
Only half of the photo came up here so I can't see much of what you did, but the bit I can see looks like a great start. Happy days, happy creating!
