We Said Goodbye to Uncle Harry, and Drawing kept Me Going

We said good bye this week to my Uncle Harry.

I never knew a better man than my dear uncle Harry Gluskin. He was the husband of my mom's youngest sister, Miriam, for 68 years. She preceded him in death two years ago on her 95th birthday. He lived to be 96 years, 7 months. I had the honor to be at his side during a short time (less than one week) in hospice care. We had a lovely sweet visit six days before that when we enjoyed lunch together, went outside and sat in the sun looking at butterflies, talked and laughed and reminisced.

He had a rich life full of love, great respect and admiration from family, friends and acquaintances.

He will be greatly missed, and we are all blessed to have known him as long as we did.

I first met my uncle when I was four years old. I was told I was meeting an uncle named Red, because he had red hair. When I saw him, I said "You aren't red, you're Orange!" He and I told that story to each other and others for 70 years! And as recently as just last week!

These photos were taken in 2013 at one of our many visits to enjoy their company.

My uncle was one of my biggest fans of my drawings. He'd ask each time we came if
I brought new drawings to show him.

He would have loved this cat whose mouth opens and closes (by a cut and fold of the paper) that I made for our grand daughters 4th birthday.
It looks like it's waving goodbye.

He had such a loving, romantic marriage, I know he'd have enjoyed this couple I drew at the ART ABOUT in Davis last week.

He got a kick out of all my Starbucks folks too.

I didn't get to show him this "Nightmare" drawing I did for Every Day in August!
It might have upset him.
My nightmare came, I am sure, because I knew I had to draw one for EDA and hadn't had one in a very long time, but one popped in on command the night before this drawing was due. I was going to see someone in prison, but instead got captured and imprisoned there myself! It was scary!
I was glad when I woke up.

He'd have liked the 'love' graffiti on this bridge, that is on a country road between Dixon and Winters, CA. We cross it all the time on our way to Winters. Also done for ED in August. "Bridge" prompt.

He enjoyed my people drawings I think, as much as I like drawing them. He asked me how many times I've drawn Fred. Here he is watching our neighbor Dave install a new sprinkling system in our backyard. He's a good neighbor.

These next two I just did today, August 19 ... It's a two page spread and I show two so you can see the women at each end. My printer isn't big enough to show them both at the same time. I liked drawing the woman with a full head of red hair.

Thank you, Uncle Harry, for being such a loving uncle, a wise mentor, a sweet friend. I will miss you, I already do.

Challenges, Challenges ... Drawing Where ever and When ever I can

I have joined a new challenge to draw Every Day In May (EDIM) on Facebook.
The following drawings are not in order nor are they all I have done so far, but enjoy these few:

Things with Bristles

An old envelope was the first love letter I ever got from my then boyfriend, now husband ... I liked how my paint made the envelop look every bit of it's 38 years of age!

My Favorite Food

Something Hot and Something that Can Be Turned On and Off

 Stairs

Headgear

Spice Bottle

A book of Arty Postcards I am now sending one by one to my grand kids for the fun of it!

Now back to Sketchbook Skool, where last Friday Koosje Koosne introduced us to our new teacher, Fabio Consoli!

They were both on bikes, she in Amsterdam and he in Italy!

I drew him again as part of a lesson on goal setting, goals I made up for myself:

And I drew my cat just cuz... The square cut away on his leg was done by the vet to clean cat bites and let his limping leg heal. Old Warrior never one to run from a fight!

On Monday last we went visit my uncle Harry, who is 96 and living in assisted living. We wore him out talking and when he dozed off I drew him as you see him here:

At lunch time we met some of his friends in the communal dining room ...

It really makes one contemplate life, and time, and how much we have (left) and
what we are going to do with it ...

We go out to lunch and I draw!

We go out for Breakfast and Coffee and I draw!

Starbucks is a great place to find people to draw!

I drew this portrait, as a gift to my friend, Carmel Campbell, in Oregon. She is a klassmate
and dear friend from Sketchbook Skool, who I have had the honor to meet with in person in Oregon and to draw with. We will do that again this summer for sure!
A real bonus from SBS is meeting your klassmates in real life when you can!
Happy Birthday, Carmel!

Thanks for stopping by! I appreciate your visits and your comments, they keep me drawing!

"My Week Started and Ended at Tacos Jalisco Sandwiched Around Family Time" Lynn Cohen

My week often involves at least one visit to Tacos Jalisco to eat lunch and draw. One of our lessons at Sketchbook Skool is to lay paint on a page and draw over it once dry. This is my second "Mexican Flag" painting with patrons at the Mexican restaurant over lunch. You can read this art journal page to see who was there.

A different lunch was a week and a half ago at the Academy of Sciences where I went to draw with these women, one I had met at Sketchbook Skool and who I learned lives fairly nearby me. We drew all morning and shared our art afterwards over lunch.

Last Friday was Grandparents Day at my twin grand kids school. I've been enjoying this day there since they were in Kindergarten. Now they are in 4th grade. Later at their house my grand daughter drew in her art journal while I drew her doing just that!

Her twin brother enjoyed his soccer magazine, probably thinking of his upcoming championship game. I enjoy drawing these kids and encouraging them to draw too.

On Saturday we went to visit my uncle Harry. He is grieving the loss of his beloved Mimi who died on May 2nd on her 95th birthday. They were together for 69 years. This is not going to be easy for Harry. He was asleep in his chair when we got there. I drew him before he woke up. Then we spent an  afternoon grieving together and getting him to tell us stories of their early life together.

At my other blog, Paper, Paint, Pencils & Pens we are drawing to the theme of "Daily Life" for two weeks. I drew my art supplies on my drawing/computer desk, after buying some new  pens. One just cannot have enough pens. I liked the Faber-Castell colored pens I found in the scrap booking section at Michael's this week.

And I wrap up the week with lunch once again at Tacos Jalisco. I sketched these folks quickly as I waited for my lunch before hurrying back to work at my office down the street.

I thank you all for dropping by to see my art efforts.
I appreciate your leaving your comments.

Have a creative week!

Uncle Harry Turns 95 This Week!

Happy Birthday Uncle Harry.

Turning 95 is a huge deal! I've had you in my life for nearly 72 years. Well, what was I, four, when you entered it? You still tell the story about me being told that my Uncle Harry's nickname was Red, because he has red hair. But when I first saw you I said,  It's NOT RED, IT'S ORANGE!" I love that we both still tell this story all these years later.

It's been a wonderful 95 years.
You are truly blessed with a wonderful wife, children,
grand children and great grand children, nieces and nephews,
friends, and community
who all
LOVE and RESPECT and CHERISH YOU!

How could we not? You are such a Mench!

95 candles for 95 years of an exemplary life!

I LOVE YOU UNCLE HARRY!
Thank you for being there for me and mine!
